In a somewhat unique marketing twist, an extremely stylized, animated trailer for Rian Johnson’s live-action film Looper has been released. It is embedded at the bottom of this post for your viewing pleasure.
Looper, for those who’ve managed to remain unexposed to the film’s recent marketing blitz, is the story of a future in which the mafia makes their adversaries sleep with the fishes … in the past. Time travel exists, but it’s controlled by criminals and used to dispose of their rivals. When an adversary stands against them, they’re sent 30 years into the past where they’re taken care of by a hitman, also known as a looper. The looper this film is about, Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), has it pretty well until the mob sends him his future self (Bruce Willis) to rub out.
The trailer seems influenced in equal measure by Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly and A-ha’s “Take on Me,” which I find incredibly appealing. As mentioned, it’s embedded below, so check it out and let us know what you think.
