No stranger to spin-off series (they recently greenlit Better Call Saul to fill the void left by Breaking Bad), AMC has announced the addition of another show set in the world of The Walking Dead.
We don’t know too much about the proposed spin-off series, except for the fact that it will focus on a different part of the zombie outbreak that plagues the world than we have seen already. This offers a number of interesting possibilities to the show, which will be executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Gale Ann Hurd, and David Halpert. Obviously with the show bringing in new characters and a new setting, it will have less ties to the comic and offer many untold stories that don’t involve Rick Grimes and his crew. ScreenCrush reports:
Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC president and general manager Charlie Collier. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”
Robert Kirkman also commented on the new series:
After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.
While some fans may be questioning the decision to create an all new show out of The Walking Dead that isn’t related to the comics, some of us prefer to look on the bright side, which is we get more of The Walking Dead! And if the series is set to air during TWD‘s downtime that means we get great zombie action all year round, which is always good in our book.
As for the regular series, we will see an addition to the cast of another comic book character. Rosalita Espinosa will be played by Christian Serratos of the Twilight movies.
ScreenCrush again reports:
According to Deadline‘s report breaking the casting, Serratos will appear in a recurring capacity over the course of season 4, with the potential to join the cast as a regular in season 5. Details are light surrounding the character for the moment, considering how AMC tends to tweak its source material, though Rosita will most likely appear with her two comic companions in tow, burly military man Sgt. Abraham Ford, and secretive brainiac Eugene Porter.
While we await the latest details from ‘The Walking Dead’ season 4, the next run of the AMC horror-drama will introduce ‘The Wire’ star Lawrence Gilliard, Jr. as comic character Bob Stookey, and upgrade actors Chad Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green and Emily Kinney to series regulars. David Morrissey’s villainous Governor will also return in season 4 as a series regular, though beyond this season his involvement seems unlikely.
