A lot has happened over the summer since we left CW’s Arrow. Season two filming is underway and Stephen Amell and company showed up at Comic-Con this year to give the fans just a little tidbit of what we can expect with the first two episodes of the new season.
Warning: If you have not watched season one in its entirety, then you probably do not want to watch this season two sizzle reel.
The biggest reveals from the first two episodes? The introduction of Caity Lutz and Summer Glau! For the briefest of moments, there was a rumor that Lutz would become Black Canary and be called Dinah Lance. Of course this led many Green Arrow fans to wonder just why on Earth Laurel Lance was on the show if she wasn’t going to someday be Black Canary. Thankfully, Andrew Kreigsberg cleared that rumor up rather quickly saying that Caity Lutz is part of the “Black Canary Origin Story”. At Comic-Con they expanded on that further saying that Lutz is actually Sarah Lance, Laurel’s sister, who apparently did not die in the yacht sinking as we previously thought.
We already knew who Summer Glau would be playing, but it is nice to see just the briefest of glimpses at Arrow’s take on the relatively new DC villain, Isabel Rochev. It will be very entertaining to see how the business mastermind jockeys a way to take over Queen Consolidated.
Along with the Season Two trailer, two big guest stars were announced at Comic-Con. Bronze Tiger (from classic Suicide Squad) will be played by actor and martial artist Michael Jai White.
Kevin Alejandro will be guest starring as Teen Titans foe, Brother Blood. Much like season one’s Count Vertigo, the names have to be changed a bit to fit with the realistic setting of Arrow, so Blood drops the Brother and becomes Sebastian Blood.
In addition to these two guest stars, it has been announced that The Killing actress Bex Taylor-Klaus will have a recurring role as Sin. Sin is wrapped up in the whole Dinah Lance/Black Canary storyline so it will be very interesting to see how the character plays into Laurel Lance’s “origin story”.
Marc Guggenheim has said that there will be two “big bads” in Season Two. Isabel Rochev (Summer Glau) could be seen as one of them and if GreenArrow.net is to be believed, it seems as if perhaps Ra’s al Ghul is the other. The site has learned that the fifth episode will be titled “The Demon’s Head” which is the Arabic translation of the DC villains name. The episode is said to include an appearance from “Awwal, a Dark Archer, trained by Merlyn who is after Lisa”.
Who’s Lisa? Well, she is yet another love interest for Oliver. It wouldn’t be the CW without a constant revolving door of “love interests”. As for Awwal, it has been announced that Homeland‘s Abu Nazi, Navid Negahban, will take on the Dark Archer mantle. Ra’s al Ghul seems like a pretty large “get” for the CW drama, but it pales in comparison to perhaps the biggest news of the summer.
The Flash is coming to The CW and will get his start on Arrow. In a three episode “soft launch”, Barry Allen will arrive in Starling City as a forensic scientist. Back to that “love interest” business, it appears as if Barry Allen will actually be a love interest for Felicity. This is one pairing that we can get behind. Poor Felicity has been giving Oliver the doe eyes for 20+ episodes now, it’s about time she got a little returned attention.
Given Arrow’s “no superpowers or metahumans” stance, it will be quite interesting to see how Kreigsberg, Guggenheim, and the other writers will deal with Allen’s more well known alter-ego as the Fastest Man Alive. The third episode featuring The Flash before he launches his own show will be directed by David Nutter, who directed not only the Arrow premiere but also the “Red Wedding” episode of Game of Thrones. Those two episodes are certainly memorable TV moments from the past year, so things seem to be in good hands.
Arrow returns to the CW on October 9th.
