Ubisoft Motion Pictures, which, as the name suggests, is the motion picture arm of video game developer Ubisoft, broke some excellent news today. Michael Fassbender, whom you’ll remember from Prometheus, X-Men: First Class, Haywire and Inglorious Basterds, has signed on to co-produce (via his DMC Pictures) and star in the Assassin’s Creed film. According to Variety, Fassbender will play the series’ “iconic hooded hero,” but they didn’t specify which one it’d be – Altaïr or the infinitely more popular Ezio.
UMP, through their Marvel Studios-esque partnership with Sony Pictures, will retain total creative control of the project. With the game’s complex story and no outside source polluting the vision of its creator, Assassin’s Creed could easily become the first film based on a video game worth watching.
If Assassin’s Creed proves to be successful, UMP hopes to bring other properties to the big screen. So, that Your Shape: Fitness Evolved flick we’ve all been dreaming of might actually happen!
