It's been almost five years since James Cameron's record breaking science fiction epic Avatar hit the big screen, but soon we'll get a chance to revisit that world. Courtesy of science fiction author Steven Gould, new stories from Pandora are headed this way.
Fox and James Cameron announced last month that Gould was brought on to write four novels that will expand Cameron’s world, and presumably set up the story for the upcoming trilogy of sequel films, which are expected to be released yearly after 2016.
Cameron noted in a press release that “Steven Gould is one of the shining lights in contemporary science fiction, and I’ve long admired the worlds and characters he’s created in his books and stories. We’re very fortunate to have Steven bring his formidable talents to the Avatar universe. He is already working closely with me and the screenwriters to flesh out the expanding world of Avatar.”
Gould is currently the president of the Science Fiction Writers of America, and is known for his novel Jumper, which was adapted for film in 2008, as well as several of his other works. His presence in the Avatar planning stages strikes us as a good thing. While we enjoyed the film, it could certainly have used a bit more nuance, and for things not to be named unobtainium. In the long run, we wouldn’t be surprised if Fox and Cameron set up something like the Star Wars or Star Trek expanded universes, with a number of novels coming out each year.
