Batman's Arkham series of video games has not only impressed fans of both genres, but it played a big part in re-invigorating the whole idea of a superhero video game. Now Batman: Arkham Knight looks to do that again.
For the first time ever, players were able to actually play a Batman game actually felt like a Batman game. No side-scrollers, fighting games, or Dark Tomorrow‘s, Rocksteady’s Arkham Asylum was the real deal. Now Asylum wasn’t without it’s issues, but the sequel Arkham City fixed those issues while making the game bigger and better than we thought it could be. A prequel called Arkham Origins was released by Warner Bros. Games Montréal, and while it didn’t offer as much of a step-up in gameplay that we have seen, it was still an enjoyable foray into the Arkham world of games.
Now Rocksteady is back with this announcement trailer that… well… let’s just take a look:
In the explosive finale to the Arkham series, Batman faces the ultimate threat against the city he is sworn to protect. The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of super villains, including Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, to destroy The Dark Knight forever. Batman: Arkham Knight introduces Rocksteady’s uniquely designed version of the Batmobile, which is drivable for the first time in the franchise. The addition of this legendary vehicle, combined with the acclaimed gameplay of the Batman Arkham series, offers gamers the ultimate and complete Batman experience as they tear through the streets and soar across the skyline of the entirety of Gotham City. Be The Batman.
First of all, let’s discuss how beautiful this trailer looks. Obviously we have yet to see any of the gameplay, but the next-gen graphics compared to previous versions of the game is pretty staggering. The trailer looks to feature PS4 graphics, but will be released on the Xbox One and PC as well.
Next, let’s just pause and take a moment to appreciate the glory that is a driveable Batmobile. We briefly saw the vehicle in Arkham Asylum, and we got to use the Batwing as a fast travel system in Arkham Origins, but we have until this point been denied the pleasure of ripping around Gotham in a beefed up Batmobile. Needless to say, using that in the first trailer is a great way to get everyone excited about the game.
Looks like we will be seeing some of the same villains, but considering the amount of Gotham rogues we have encountered over three games already, that is unsurprising. What is interesting is the fact that Scarecrow is organizing all of these villains together in what looks to be a full on war for Gotham, which kind of mirrors some of the events happening in Forever Evil and Arkham War in the comics. Also, the reading of Thomas Wayne’s will and his final words to Bruce is an interesting facet to the trailer, which leads us to believe there will be more coming there as well.
Fans of the series have been predicting the announcement of another Rocksteady for a while now, especially considering the many questions left after Arkham City. Also adding fuel to the fire were old comments from Kevin Conroy AKA THE voice of Batman, who said he was working on another Arkham game after Roger Craig Smith had been cast for Arkham Origins. And with Joker presumed dead after the events of Arkham City, Scarecrow is an interesting choice to head the villains in the game.
While still a little early to start speculating on storylines and new additions to the game (can we please play as sidekicks in the main game? Please?), this first look gives us more than enough to get excited about. As always, there will be pre-order bonuses available at the official website, with more sure to come from retailers. The first one released allows you to play as Harley Quinn, which is fairly interesting.
