Sir Ben Kingsley's lips are sealed as to what his ultra secret One-Shot for Marvel studios is exactly, but intrepid gossip mongers think they've gotten to the bottom of this latest Hollywood mystery.
The “real” Mandarin might be making a comeback to ask Kingsley’s hapless actor a few pointed questions. The Latino Review reported that Kingsley will return for a Marvel One-Shot reprising his controversial take on the Mandarin from Iron Man 3. Spoilers ahead for those who have yet to still see IM3.
Ben Kingsley played Trevor Slattery, an actor hired to breathe life into the mega-terrorist called the Mandarin. Kingsley’s successful play and riff on the character clearly rankled some fans, but had little impact on viewers unfamiliar with the character at the box office. After all, Iron Man 3 topped off at over a billion dollars in worldwide sales with just a hair more than the combined ticked sales of the previous two films, which is clearly a vindication of Director/Screenwriter’s Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) and his Mandarin makeover. Kingsley was his usual cagey self when speaking to Vanity Fair about the project, “I can’t confirm that… It’s in progress. It will have to remain under wraps”.
One pitch floating around for the new short film was that the real Mandarin “wants to set the record straight about himself” and seeks out Kingsley’s far out actor stand-in. Co-writer Drew Pearce nixed that idea when he told Coming Soon the short film “would not apologize for the movie’s take.” Marvel has delivered on 4 of these high quality short films and most likely will continue to use the format to boost future projects. So far Kingsley’s short does not yet have a title.
