Ever since Thanos was revealed as the big bad at the end of the first Avengers movie (no spoiler warning here…you should know this by now), fans have been wondering who would be playing the Death-worshipping, Infinity Gauntlet-wielding, purple-jawed Titan. While it’s not been confirmed, there’s a strong possibility that Benicio Del Toro may wind up donning the purple make up—or at least a form-fitting motion capture suit.
The news comes by way of a post on Deadline Hollywood from Monday, in which it’s reported that Del Toro has joined the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, the Marvel Comics space-epic franchise that will soon join Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the rest in the Marvel movie universe. Del Toro is set to play an as-yet unnamed “character that is built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies.”
Multiple movies? Like, say, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers 2? Sure, there’s no hard evidence that he’ll be Thanos. Frankly, when thinking of Thanos, Del Toro isn’t necessarily the first actor to spring to mind. But he is pretty great at playing creeps on film, and they don’t get much creepier than Thanos. And the fact that his role is being guarded as a secret seems like a dead giveaway.
As fans of the comics know, Thanos is a space-based villain. And if Marvel’s looking for a good way to introduce a cosmic villain to the more-or-less grounded movie universe, they could do a lot worse than bringing him in via Guardians of the Galaxy, with a return performance in the next Avengers flick.
It makes sense to us… what do you think? Is Del Toro Thanos? And if he isn’t… who the heck is he?
