After months of rumors, the cast for Big Hero 6, Disney's first animated Marvel movie, were announced this week. Let's meet our new team of heroes.
Ryan Potter, the 18 year old actor/martial artist best known for his role in Supah Ninjas (2011), will voice Hiro. The robotics genius is headed down the dark path when the unexpected turns his life in a direction he never imagined. Hiro must use his genius skills and the help of a team of unlikely heroes, to aide him in his quest to stop his own invention, micro-bots, that have fallen in to the wrong hands. Together they are Big Hero 6.
Voiced by 30 Rock funny man Scott Adsit, the bot originally designed to care for the sick will, with a little help from Hiro, become so much more. With a bit of reprogramming that adds to his skill set a rocket fist, super strength and rocket thrusters, Baymax becomes a huge asset to Big Hero 6.
T.J Miller (Silicon Valley) takes on the role of Fred, or Fredzilla, the laid back comic aficionado whose fire-breathing alter ego with built in communications and super bounce helps Big Hero 6 get the job done. Miller is no stranger to animation, he also voices Tuffnutt Thorston in the How to Train Your Dragon movies.
Go Go Tomago
Real World participant turned real world actress, Jamie Chung, probably most recognized for her role as Mulan in the ABC/Disney hit show Once Upon A Time, will voice Go Go Tomago, who Disney describes as a ”…tough, athletic and loyal to the bone, but not much of a conversationalist. Popping bubble gum and delivering well-placed sarcasm are totally her speed. The daredevil adrenaline junkie is at her best on wheels, and when Go Go joins forces with Big Hero 6, she rolls like never before, using maglev discs as wheels, shields and throwing weapons.”
Genesis Rodriguez (The Last Stand), will voice Honey Lemon. While her long blond hair and quirky style may remind you of the soft spoken Luna Lovegood of Harry Potter fame, Honey is a genius in her own right. Her brand of chemistry infused alchemy was the perfect match for Rodriguez, who was into science and robotics in school. In a Disney press release the films co-director Don Hall (along with Chris Williams) says, ”She brings some of that goofy, slightly geeky but joyful thing to the character.”
Voiced by Damon Wayans Jr. (Happy Endings, New Girl), Wasabi is another genius member of Big Hero 6. The slightly neurotic hero uses his wicked martial arts skills and epic plasma blades to do his part.
While none of the gang are exactly super heroes when the story begins, by the end they truly are a team. Additional cast members include Maya Rudolph as Aunt Cass, James Cromwell as Professor Callaghan, Alan Tudyk as Alistair Krei, and Daniel Henney as Hiro’s brother Tadashi.
While the characters have been “disneyfied”, the anime inspiration that is prevalent in the comics seems to still have a place in the new movie, which is reminiscent of 2009′s Astro Boy, in animation style at least.
