1986 was a somewhat unremarkable year.
On one hand you have the birth of people like Emmy Rossum and Arrow’s Laurel Lance, Katie Cassidy, the opening of Pixar Animation Studios, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. On the other hand, we had a weak economy, the untimely death of Len Bias, and the tragic Challenger explosion. It’s probably not the year most would choose to relive, and there likely aren’t many people who would voluntarily do so. Which is where we introduce you to Blair McMillan.
When McMillan took a look at his family and noticed that they were spending more time with electronics than with each other, he put forth an interesting idea to his girlfriend. What if they put away the gadgets and went back to a simpler time? Somewhat amazingly, his girlfriend was on board and they, along with their two small children, left behind the smartphones, iPads, laptops, and the internet, for an entire year. No technology from after 1986, which most of us can agree would be a very challenging year..
Now, instead of settling into the couch to catch up on Game of Thrones, they pop in a VHS tape. Eschewing modern fashions, McMillan instead opts for cutoff jorts and a mustache reminiscent of Tom Selleck and ’80s adult entertainment. That is a level of dedication even today’s hipsters can’t match.
So why choose 1986, specifically? Simply put, that is when McMillan himself was a child and like many of us, he looks back at that period of time with fondness. His memories of childhood also dictate what the family has and does not have. For example, they do not have an answering machine because McMillan’s family did not have one in 1986, despite the answering machine being commercial available since the ’60s.
They have made a few allowances to modern times. Instead of sticking to entertainment that was released before 1987, they let their kids watch more recent movies like The Lion King (1994) and others. Of course, Transformers: The Movie came out 1986, so hopefully the kids will check out that animated cinematic masterpiece in the spirit of their year in the past.
