It had to surface eventually. Once thought lost to the darkest corners of the Hellmouth, a clip from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated series that was never meant to be has started making its rounds on YouTube in the past few days. I LOVE the still art that this show is based on (from Eric Wight, who was the real artistic hand behind the super hero characters created by the OC's Seth Cohen), but this 3 1/2 minute clip just feels too Saturday morning cartoonish and cheap. Maybe it takes some getting used to.
As much as I begged for this show to become a reality when I first heard about it years ago, I’m now kind of glad it didn’t work out in this form. With the rise of adult swim, I’ve realized that my dreams could only be satisfied if Buffy and company could be resurrected in a style reminiscent of the best animated show on television: the Venture Bros. Sharp humor, great voices and characters, and edgy storytelling that even the lowest common denominator network UPN wouldn’t touch.
Hey, Seth Green, you have an “in” at the network and you’re good at gathering up your buddies to to voice acting on Robot Chicken… see if you can’t find a way to re-form the Scooby Gang and marry them off to a top-notch animation/storytelling team. Pull in all of those lost scripts from Jane Espenson, David Fury, and of course, Joss Whedon, and we’ve got a hit on our hands! Hell, if you don’t want to step back into Buffy’s past as this animated non-series did, just animate season 8 from the Dark Horse Comics and we’ll all be sufficiently staked… errr, stoked. Joss would have to oversee it, of course… he’s not too busy these days, is he? (i know, joss, i know… now gimme more Dr Horrible! I’m dying here.)
I will do degrading things to myself and/or Nathan Fillion in order to make this happen. I might even say please. Call me.
