Dominic Cooper, aka Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger, has signed on to co-star in the Scott Waugh’s film adaptation of Electronic Arts’ Need for Speed game series. The film’s cast already includes Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later).
The game series has no narrative to speak of, so the similarities between it in the film will likely be in name only. The film’s plot, according to Variety, will involve a mechanic (Paul) seeking revenge after being framed for the murder of a friend. An ex-NASCAR driver (Cooper) that fixes up cars for the rich and an exotic car dealer (Poots) will factor into the plot somehow.
Despite the usual quality of video game-based films, I think this will be great. Waugh, co-director of last year’s Act of Valor and former stuntman, has proven himself capable of handling action sequences; he’s not so great with the acting side of things, though. Since the Need for Speed cast has a handful of seasoned professionals the latter shouldn’t be too much of a worry. What’s not to like about a B movie with good actors about cars and revenge?
If all goes according to plan, the film will be in theaters on February 7, 2014. Will you be going along for the ride?
