If ever there was a film cast and concept that screamed "Oscar Bait!", it's Lincoln, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Daniel Day Lewis, along with an endless cast of Hollywood's who's who. Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Jackie Earle Haley, Jared Harris, James Spader, Walton Goggins, Gregory Itzin, Lee Pace, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is just in EVERYTHING these days. I wouldn't be surprised if the battle scene extras were populated solely by the lead casts of Falling Skies and Terra Nova.
It seems like Spielberg makes tossing out a sweeping historical drama every year look incredibly easy. He may never do another Raiders of the Lost Ark, but now that he’s grown up, there’s still a chance he will give us another Schindler’s List. Either way, we can safely say that he’ll make a film that will either humanize a historical icon or deftly bring into focus a dark corner of our murky past, often between effortlessly churning out yet another simply good or genuinely great sci-fi spectacle. Considering that this film focuses on the last 4 months of this president’s life, odds are good that it will be both. All I know is that I’ll probably be weeping patriotically by the end of the film.
Abraham Lincoln is that American icon that we all think we know. He was our 16th president. He freed the slaves. He wore a stovepipe hat. He’s on our pennies and fives. He hunts vampires. Of course, this isn’t the first film to be made of Honest Abe and it will certainly not be the last. But could it be the best? Or could it be a tremendously overblown flop? I’m betting on the former. Daniel Day Lewis lends gravitas to any role he takes. He’s not an actor dressed up as Lincoln. I’m pretty sure he IS Lincoln in this movie. If this trailer is any indication, this will be the epic that all other films will have to face off against come Oscar season.
What do you think? Is this Spielberg’s next humanizing yet gloriously sweeping, Oscar-snagging epic?
Lincoln arrives in theaters November 9th (exclusive) and expands to the rest of the world November 16th.
