News from Marvel's Daredevil hasn't exactly been hitting hard and fast lately, but as the cast is shaping up we are starting to get a better feel for the highly anticipated Netflix series.
After Charlie Cox won the role of Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil, it was quickly announced he would be facing off against Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin, a rivalry that has defined both characters for years. Of course, other important characters in the life of Matt Murdock were quick to follow, rounding out the primary cast.
While he will will next grace the big screen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Elden Henson will be following that up with the role of Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s closest friend, law partner, and superhero confidante. Foggy has played a large role in the life of Murdock for years, and was previously portrayed on screen by Jon Favreau in the disappointing 2003 film. Marvel’s TV head Jeph Loeb made a statement on the casting of Henson:
Elden plays one of the most important characters in the world of ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we’re thrilled to see Foggy Nelson brought to life by such an incredibly talented actor. He perfectly captures the heart and soul of this series, bringing an added resonance to Matt Murdock’s fight against the injustice in their great city.
We are excited to see Henson’s take on Foggy, who sounds like a pivotal character in the Netflix series, as he should be. Henson more recently appeared on the TV series Intelligence as Amos Pembroke, though we imagine his Foggy Nelson will be a little more – groomed. Of course, there is another employee of Nelson & Murdock who has also recently been cast.
Deborah Ann Woll will join the series as Karen Page, who started in the comics as a receptionist at Matt and Foggy’s law firm, before turning into a major love interest of both Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson. Our love for Deborah Ann Woll grew steadily as we watched her performance as Jessica Hamby on True Blood, and we couldn’t be more excited to see her added to the cast of Marvel’s Daredevil. Page appeared briefly in the 2003 film, played by Ellen Pompeo.
It remains to be seen whether Woll will be playing the typical role as a love interest for Murdock and Nelson or not, but in the comics she does have one very specific moment that affected Daredevil’s life forever. Karen Page, in the throes of drug addiction, sold the secret identity of Daredevil to Wilson Fisk, which forever changed the rivalry between the two men. She has even appeared frequently in the pages of Ghost Rider before she returned to Daredevil and met her demise at the hands of master assassin Bullseye.
Finally, not too long after D’Onofrio was announced as the Kingpin of Crime, it was also announced that Rosario Dawson was joining the cast in an unnamed role. While only a small amount of her character’s story was revealed, it does sound like she might also end up vying for the affections of Murdock, who is no stranger to rocky relationships in the comics. THR has more on Dawson’s role in the series:
She will play a dedicated young woman whose quest to heal the wounds of Hell’s Kitchen brings blind attorney Matt Murdock unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices of this broken city.
Dawson is planned to appear in multiple episodes in some capacity, which we expect to hear more of at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. With some of the main characters now cast, the next few announcements should open up the series a little bit, especially if we hear news that key characters like Elektra or Bullseye are making their way onto the small screen as well.
