Jim Lee. Artist, editor, writer, publisher and now bust designer?
Lee – who is known for his work on characters like Batman, Superman, the X-Men, as well as being one of the founders of Image Comics – has now turned his artistic skills to the collectables market. This is far from the first time Jim Lee’s work has been turned into a collectable. Numerous different models, busts and toys have come out brandishing his trade mark style, including toys based on the comic series Hush whizzing off the shelves.
The difference here is that instead of directly being based on his artwork, Jim has designed the character busts himself, which focus on some of the characters riding high in the New 52 universe. Below is a selection of sketches on which the new busts in the line are based on.
DC are getting quite well known for their top quality statues and busts (like their great Supergirl piece, and of course the Black and White series is a favorite of ours) and this line is no exception. The first line includes Green Arrow and Harley Quinn with a Flash bust soon to follow. While Jim has drawn the layouts for these it is sculptor James Shoop who has crafted them. The Green Arrow bust ships in May, while you will have to wait until September for Harley Quinn. No news on the Flash release date yet however. Both busts will cost $49.95 and are limited to 2500.
The detail on these pieces is superb, but Jim Lee’s work has always been great and Shoop’s sculpts have captured his designs perfectly. Shoop’s previous sculpts of characters like Sinestro, The Spirit and Booster Gold are superb as is his work on numerous different superhero action figures.
Both of these busts will look great sitting next to the recently released Batman bust that Lee and Shoop created, which came out earlier this year.
What characters this line up could have in the future is currently unknown, but it will be interesting to see what Jim and James decide on. We will be keeping a close eye on these great collectible pieces, so keep checking with Geek for more updates as they arrive.
