Constantine might not be a non-smoker, Felicity might be the one with the love interest this time, villains obviously run Gotham and more in this DC TV update!
Had you been watching the internet when it was announced that Constantine was picked up for series, you would have noticed that one of the first things everyone asked was “will Constantine be a heavy smoker?”. Don’t believe me? Go Google “Constantine Sm” and right off the bat, autofill will return with “smoking” and “smoking nbc” as your first results.
When the Constantine trailer came out, guess what happened? You are correct – people kept asking about the smoking. It reached a point that some (me) were curious if perhaps Marlboro had planted commentors all clamoring for John Constantine (played by Matt Ryan) to be a chain smoker. Well it appears as if both the smokers and the non-smokers are going to be getting their way when Constantine premieres on October 24.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association press event over the weekend, David S. Goyer said that while Constantine would be a smoker, they weren’t going to be “glorifying it.” Of course that is a big load of vague, so he was pressed further.
That’s a question you probably should ask the network afterward, but they’re beholden to broadcast standards. So we get it. We know the universe that we’re existing within and, trust me, we heard pitches from all different camps — ‘Let’s give him a patch’ or ‘he eats a lot of gum.’ We thought [showing him] having to snub something out is more truthful.- via
Okay then, cigarette butts for everyone! Perhaps Constantine would have been more at home on AMC where John Constantine and Don Draper could have shared a Lucky Strike and lung cancer. Another aspect of the character that might have been shown had it found a home on cable instead of NBC, is the canonical fact that John Constantine is bisexual. Don’t expect any hanky panky of that sort, no sir. Executive producer Daniel Cerone said the reason was because it wasn’t a major aspect of the character. I don’t think it’s hard to imagine that the bigger answer is that it is not an aspect of the character that appears on NBC.
Now that those two issues are laid to rest, let’s move on to more pressing Constantine news.
The show hasn’t even aired yet and already there is talk of a possible spin-off. During an interview at the Television Critics Association press event, Goyer teased a possible appearance by another DC character that could go on to have his own show.
Within the context of episode five, we had a need for a police officer who sees that supernatural evils exist. Right there, okay, that’s an opportunity to introduce a DC character. So we talked to our DC representatives and we’re like what if we make this character Jim Corrigan, who goes on the become The Spectre. For those who don’t know, Jim Corrigan is a police officer who kind of takes the law into his own hands… he ends up dying and is reincarnated as The Spectre. So it’s a perfect opportunity for us, because we can name this character Jim Corrigan and within our story, for the general viewer, that works, because now Constantine has a friend on the force. For the comic book fan, ‘My god, that’s Jim Corrigan!’ And we can get back to that character and can slowly develop that character and who knows, maybe there’s an opportunity in the future to even see the origin story unfold within the framework of our TV series. It creates opportunities and creatively you just have to go in and lay that groundwork in and try and let it unfold naturally. So we’re in the midst of approvals on that, but that’s one idea we’re exploring right now. — via
I don’t know about you, but I’d watch a TV show about The Spectre. He isn’t the only member of the DC Universe making their way to NBC. Remember in the Constantine trailer when we met the young Liv? Well I hope you weren’t that attached to her because Liv is no more. In what seems like a rare moment in TV writing history, the writers of Constantine realized they had written themselves into a corner with the Liv storyline and decided to cut bait and go a different direction.
That different direction is named Zed, to be played by Angelica Celaya. I personally was not familiar with the character of Zed so I went off to a mecca of internet information – Wikia. Let me just say, I really hope this storyline makes its way into the show.
She aids him in the rescue of his niece, Gemma, from an occultist pedophile who collects child brides. She is then taken into custody by her father, a senior member of the Resurrection Crusade, who attempts to offer her to an angel for the purpose of conceiving a baby who will become the new Messiah. Constantine thwarts this plan, however, by spoiling her with his own Nergal-tainted blood before the heavenly coupling can be consummated.
Imagine that meeting for a moment, “no to the smoking, hell no to the bisexual activity, but this occultist pedophile thing? Run with that.”
While we wait to see if that will ever happen, let’s move on to Arrow.
There was a moment in the season two finale of Arrow in which all Olicity shippers (of which I learned my husband is one – you learn something new everyday, even about people you spend everyday with) likely experienced a small myocardial infarction. That was quickly followed by perhaps some frustrated screaming but is there still hope for Felicity and Oliver? The season 3 logline sure makes it appear as if there is.
In the aftermath of this victory, Season Three opens with Arrow now a hero to the citizens of Starling. Crime is down, people feel safer, and Captain Lance even calls off the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Basking in his success, Oliver believes he can finally have a private life and asks Felicity out on a date. But the second Oliver takes his eye off the ball, a deadly villain reappears in Starling, forcing Oliver to realize that he can never be Oliver Queen – not as long as the city needs The Arrow.
Cue the squealing. But don’t get too excited as we know how those “deadly villain” types like to ruin things. They are why we can’t have nice things. However, Greg Berlanti was asked to expound on this possible Felicity and Oliver romance and perhaps not all is lost on that front.
They’re real characters to us, and they had that conversation on the beach, and they had that conversation in the house to help capture Slade. So the question you have to ask is: Does Oliver have real, genuine emotions for her? And how aware is he of that? And how aware does he make her of that? That is an active part of the season this year. — via
Interesting. Very interesting. Especially given the fact that Green Arrow and Black Canary are the ones married in the comics. As much as I would love to see them stick to that for the show, let’s not kid ourselves, Felicity Smoak sort of kicks Laurel Lance’s ass. Of course it would be foolish to believe that Oliver and Felicity are end game, especially once Brandon Routh comes to town as Ray Palmer, aka The Atom.
But it is no longer foolish to believe that Sarah Lance will still be a part of the show in some fashion as it was confirmed yesterday that Caity Lotz is indeed slated to return for season three of Arrow!

Can’t say that is a bad thing as Ms. Lotz was a delight to watch this past season. It is undetermined whether or not she will be in the main storyline or will be only seen with the recently cast Katana in the Hong Kong flashbacks.
Speaking of Hong Kong. Not really but I don’t have a clever segue so let’s just pretend that works.
Unlike the quiet iZombie (which will be showing their pilot at Comic-Con so look for more news from them soon), Gotham is putting out news left and right. Earlier this week we looked at both a new Gotham trailer and TV spot and yet there is still plenty to discuss. First, let’s talk about this “Villains” TV spot because I love it.
Much like the original Gotham trailer, the editing on this spot is just great. Plus it doesn’t just rehash the “Bruce Wayne’s parents are killed and Jim Gordon is going to find the guy who did this” bits we’ve seen in every other trailer. While the show still describes itself as the story of Jim Gordon before Batman, let’s not kid ourselves, those villains are the real draw. Already we have The Riddler, Penguin, the new character of Fish Mooney and a young Catwoman, and there is talk of Mr. Freeze joining the party. Well, Danny Cannon, director of the Gotham pilot, is talking about Mr. Freeze at least.
I have a big pitch with Bruno about the Mr. Freeze character, whose origins are uncertain. If I can win Geoff Johns over and if I can win Bruno over, then I look forward to the moment where that character can be realized. — via
As long as the Gotham version of Mr. Freeze doesn’t even come close to dialogue such as “let’s kick some ice” then perhaps this is a good move. But the first hint of a stupid pun, and I imagine there will be screams of nerdrage echoing throughout the land.
But for now, let’s focus on what we do know, and this is that there is yet another Gotham trailer! Fox is pulling out all the stops on promoting this show it seems, let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Much like the previous trailers, this one focuses on Gordon and his relationship with the city of Gotham and its perhaps less than desirable residents. Speaking of, we will perhaps be getting a more in-depth look at how Oswald Cobblepot came to be The Penguin as his mother has been added to the show! Carol Kane will be playing Gertrud Kapelput and I for one can not wait to see what type of mommy issues Penguin has. You know they will be plentiful and likely very interesting.
Gotham will also be airing its pilot at Comic-Con so brace yourself for even more news from the Batman universe!
Outside of the news that Robbie Amell has come aboard as Ronnie Raymond, aka Firestorm, there hasn’t been a lot of news from The Flash. As they are also airing their pilot at Comic-Con, expect that to change.
So that about wraps up this edition of DC TV! What bits get you most excited for the coming fall? The possibility of Mr. Freeze? Olicity dating? Don’t lie, it’s the occultist pedophile. Whatever it is, let us know in the comments below or as always, on the Geek Facebook page!
Until next time DC fans!
(In case you were wondering, there’s been no news yet on if my #IWantABoosterGoldTVShow campaign has reached anyone at DC. Y’all will be the first to know if it does.)
