It seems the news never stops from the various DC TV series we are anxiously waiting for. Today we have new footage from three of the series, with casting announcements all around!
The CW First Look provided a glimpse into the upcoming seasons on the CW, which includes quick reveals from The Flash, iZombie, and Arrow, as well as other returning shows like Supernatural, The 100 and The Vampire Diaries. These CW First Looks offer not only new footage from the various shows, but in this case, the first footage from iZombie, which was slated to premiere the pilot at San Diego Comic Con, but cancelled after ‘cast changes.’
While the new footage doesn’t give us all that much to go on, it does drop a few interesting details. First off, the trailer is incredibly heavy with vampires, with even Arrow mentioning the mythological creatures of the night. While it might seem a little too out of the real-world bubble Arrow has remained in for a few seasons, vampires have become a definite part of DC’s New 52 comic universe, so there might be something there.
Again, very little from iZombie and The Flash to speculate on much, but we do get some interesting character moments and more shots of Grant Gustin as the Flash, which continues to keep us excited for the premiere of the Arrow spin-off. The Flash will premiere on October 7th, with iZombie airing mid season. NBC released a new promo for Constantine that offered up a bit more footage as well.
Moving on to casting announcements, we have new characters appearing in The Flash, Arrow, and Fox’s Gotham. Another villain joining The Flash will be Plastique, played by Kelly Frye. Plastique is usually involved with Captain Atom or even Firestorm, whose alter ego Ronnie Raymond will be played by Robbie Amell. Plastique has also served with the Suicide Squad, which has been said to have a larger presence in season three of Arrow. She is described as “a bomb disposal expert in Iraq who, following exposure to the energy released by the S.T.A.R. Labs meltdown, Bette now has the ability to turn any object she touches into an explosive device. On the run from the shadow forces in the U.S. government trying to turn her into a human weapon, she finds an ally in fellow meta-human The Flash.”
A well known mob boss from the Batman mythology has also been added to the cast of Gotham. David Zayas (Dexter) will be playing Sal Maroni, who is most famously known for throwing acid on Harvey Dent’s face, turning him into the criminal known as Two-Face. Maroni also appeared in The Dark Knight played by Eric Roberts, and it will be interesting to see how his presence affects Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Fish Mooney, the current crime boss of Gotham,
Now, adding further to the hero-filled roster of Arrow‘s season three are a few more heroic names from the comics. First, J.R. Ramirez is slated to appear as Ted Grant AKA Wildcat, who “will be a former boxer who now runs a gym for underprivileged youth. A man with a mysterious past, he will play a pivotal role in Laurel Lance’s arc this season.” Whether or not this arc has Laurel finally moving into the role of Black Canary remains to be seen, especially with Caity Lotz set to return as the current Canary.
We are also set to learn even more about Felicity Smoak this season, played by Emily Bett Rickards. Along with her origin episode – titled “Oracle’ – and her time on both Arrow and The Flash, we will be introduced to Felicity’s mom, played by Charlotte Ross (NYPD Blue). TVGuide went into a little more detail on the character, and getting to know Felicity:
Ross, whose credits also include Nashville,Days of Our Lives and Glee, is slated to appear in at least one episode in early November. Details on Felicity’s mother — including her name and whether she’ll appear in flashback or present day — are being kept heavily guarded.
Arrow is planning a series of Felicity-centric flashbacks that the producers call “the secret origin of Felicity Smoak.” “We are absolutely going to get to know her,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently said. “We know that she went to MIT, we know that her mom was a cocktail waitress in Vegas and we’re going to meet that mom. And we also know that her dad is not in the picture.”
Finally, David Cubitt (Medium) has joined the cast as Mark Shaw AKA Manhunter, who will be “an A.R.G.U.S. operative in Corto Maltese who crosses paths with Diggle.” Shaw is one of a few humans who have taken on the role of Manhunter in the DC comics, with another being Kate Spencer, who appeared on Arrow last season as an attorney, before being killed in Deathstroke’s raid on the city. In the comics the character is tied to the alien robots known as the Manhunters, though we don’t expect that connection to exist in Arrow.
The CW is certainly bringing together a powerful assemblage of heroic characters into their own particular shared universe, which is not a bad thing. Of course, I know Amanda would get mad at me if I don’t mention that they still don’t have plans to bring Booster Gold into the shared universe despite her many tweets and protestations, but it’s a good start to a larger DC TV universe.
