Were we any closer to April 1st, I'd be a bit more skeptical, but this appears to be legit. Still, I... ummm... wow. I'm a little speechless. Mal's face pretty much summed up my reaction when I first read the news.
One would have thought that Lucasfilm would be too big to be acquired by anyone, but if anyone would be able to do it, it’s Disney. For a price a little over $4 billion dollars, half of which would go to Lucas directly in cash, Disney would take ownership of the Star Wars franchise, with the potential for more films in the series every few years once out of Lucas’s hands, though he will remain as a creative consultant on the saga. Star Wars Episode 7 is already in the works for a 2015 debut.
George Lucas, chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm LTD had this to say about the deal, “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”
We’ll have more on this as it develops…
UPDATE – 2:50pm Tuesday:
