Time to fire up your TARDIS and get your sonic screwdrivers ready, because the good Doctor is back with a new Doctor Who Christmas special that is bound to leave fans begging for more!
Fresh off the megahit “Day of the Doctor” 50th anniversary special, Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman return in an all new Christmas special titled “The Time of the Doctor.” Now hang onto your fez, as this will be Smith’s last appearance as the Doctor.
The synopsis states that the Doctor and the galaxy’s deadliest species are drawn to a backwater planet by a mysterious signal. Can the Doctor and his companion Clara (who he has apparently abducted from a family Christmas dinner) discover the source of the call and what it means? Not only for the fate of the universe, but for the fate of the Doctor as well.
The preview shows us Cybermen, Weeping Angels, The Silence, and of course the Daleks as Clara yells at some unseen person to help the Doctor change the future! Throw in an enigmatic line about the clock striking twelve, finals bows, the siege of Trenzalore and you have the makings of what could be another classic episode that is sure to thrill fans around the world. The one thing missing from the preview is 13th Doctor (14th if we factor in events of Day of the Doctor), Peter Capaldi. Chances are they’re holding back his appearance until the new season debuts sometimes next year. But you never know with these specials as “The Runaway Bride” in 2006 introduced comedienne Catherine Tate as Donna Nobel. We’re sure this season’s special will be loaded with surprises.
There have been eight Doctor Who Christmas specials since the show rebooted in 2005: “The Christmas Invasion”, “The Runaway Bride”, “Voyage of the Damned”, “The Next Doctor”, “The End of Time”, “A Christmas Carol”, “The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe”, and “The Snowmen”.
“The Time of the Doctor” airs on BBC America on December 25th at 9PM EST.
