If you're missing your quirky "Troy and Abed In The Morning" fix, you're not alone. Community fans have been pining for actor Donald Glover since his departure from the series earlier this season.
Glover, himself, has been quoted as saying, “I call Community the best day job in the world, because between takes, I get to write music. I get to write sketches. I get to write movies. It’s the best job ever.”
For the role of Troy Barnes, Glover was named one of the “Eight Actors Who Turn Television into Art,” in a 2011 New York Times Magazine cover story. He previously worked as a writer for the NBC comedy 30 Rock, receiving a Writers Guild of America Award nomination in 2009.
Rapping (and tweeting) under the stage name Childish Gambino, Glover recently participated in a “hackathon” at SXSW and sent this email to his followers:
Hey fans, Childish Gambino here. I really hope you are excited for this hackathon. More info coming soon.
p.s. I am returning to Community, because the internet.
But closer examination shows that the character of Troy Barnes is indeed gone from Greendale Community College, at least for now.
Season 5 of the show has already wrapped production, @DonaldGlover tweets as Childish Gambino (advocating Glover’s “Deep Web” at becausetheinter.net), and fan-site Twitter account @ForeverChildish has proclaimed the Hackathon/Community email a fake.
But wait! #SixSeasonsAndAMovie say the faithful. Or what about the blinking dot tracking devices Abed planted on his fellow study group members? Is it sheer coincidence that he says, “When one of you gets kidnapped, you’ll be glad…” and shortly after Troy’s departure, he gets kidnapped?
Maybe Pierce’s blinking dot will not be in the last place they saw it either. Just sayin’.
