For quite some time, Sam Raimi was set to direct Warner Brothers' World of Warcraft film. Last July, though, scheduling conflicts led to the studio removing him from the film. That caused many to question whether or not the film would still be made. Well, friends, it looks like things are coming together; yesterday, Duncan "Zowie Bowie" Jones (Moon, Source Code) was named as Raimi's replacement. Production is set to begin at some point in 2013.
Raimi planned on telling a unique story set against the backdrop of the game. Will Jones do the same? No one is sure at the moment, but it’d be surprising if he didn’t go that route. There are several narratives within the game; however, none of them would be easily adaptable (although, a CG “Knights of Pandaria” might be fun). Jones, an avid gamer, has already made it clear that he’s bent on making this the first proper video game movie. I have faith in him. Do you?
Now that you have the facts, here’s a rumor: Warner Brothers allegedly wants Johnny Depp for a lead role in the film. I can’t find anything solid to back this up, but still felt it was worth a mention.
