E3 2013 – Peeling Away the Layers of Tearaway

I’m sitting here at my desk the day after E3 officially ended. My body and mind are still on overload and my legs feel like jello. There’s a few things that really stick out in my mind though...

The surround sound capabilites of the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which you can read about here, getting some hands on time with a fully functioning Oculus Rift unit, and, finally, a tiny little game that sat on the edge of a row of PSVita demo units called “Tearaway” from MediaMolecule, the people behind Little Big Planet.

After playing Tearaway, it’s no surprise that it won “Best PSVita Game of E3 2013.” You explore a beautiful all-paper world as a messenger named Iota. However, the stand-out feature of Tearaway is probably less about the storyline, though wonderful, and more about the visual and functional aspects. Making use of the features available on the PSVita, Tearaway manages to produce an experience that was anything but boring. The game environment is completely made of paper, everything from leaves to rain to the characters themselves. To top it off, Tearaway also manages to replicate the properties of paper to a certain extent, where wet paper wilts and thin paper tears. The game becomes about manipulating the environment to achieve your goals. Even the in-game currency is a nod to paper – confetti.

The Playstation rep we spoke to, Elizabeth, was very excited about the game, and, after playing, her enthusiasm was understandable. Tearaway is most literally an experience. And it’s an experience that’s different from your usual first person shooters and even side scrollers. Few games have produced the same level of enjoyment that Tearaway did for me. It’s definitely on par with games like Limbo. Although I only spent about 15 minutes with it, I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of my own. First impressions are everything, right?
