Fox's Fantastic Four rounds out its primary cast with the announcement that a deal is close for Doctor Doom.
First off, we need to make mention of the fact that today is April 1st, more commonly known as April Fools Day, which of course is the worst day for online news sites. For years we have been forced to wade very carefully through any news stories published on this prank-loving holiday, and so we take this announcement with a grain of salt, despite the legitimacy of the sources.
Variety first reported that Toby Kebbell (Prince of Persia, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) has been cast as Victor von Doom AKA Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four’s greatest enemy. He joins Miles Teller (Reed Richards), Kate Mara (Sue Storm), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm), and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm) in Josh Trank’s reboot, though it is currently unclear how Kebbell’s Doom will fit into the story.
Earlier rumors had stated that Fox wasn’t opposed to looking at a female lead for the role of Doom, which sparked a bit of outcry among fans, which is something this film is no stranger to. Obviously Fox didn’t comment on the earlier rumor, so whether a female Doom was previously an option or not remains to be seen.
We’ve seen a few different origin stories for Doom and the Fantastic Four over the years, but the film will hopefully stick with the rivalry between Richards and Doom, which may be difficult considering the age differences between Teller and Kebbell. This film would presumably adapt the Ultimate Fantastic Four’s origin (considering the youth of the new cast), which saw Doom also receive powers along with the rest of the Fantastic Four.
Of course, we can still remember the wooden and disappointing performance from Julian McMahon in both of Tim Story’s attempts with the Fantastic Four, so it is hard to get really excited to see Doom on the big screen again, especially with a relatively unknown actor in the role.
There is still a lot we don’t know about the development of the Fantastic Four reboot, such as whether or not this will be the only villain we see cast for the film, especially considering most comic book movie tendencies to overfill the movie with villains. As always, we will keep an eye on this story and any other developments with the new Fantastic Four.
