Game On at the SXSW Geek Stage – March 8-10

The Geek team is heading to Austin, Texas, next weekend to SXSW to host the official Geek Stage.  It will be the place to be as we offer up a who's who of gaming greats, including the people behind Gears of War: Judgment, Minecraft, Tomb Raider, Borderlands, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and more!  But we've also got more than just gaming on our schedule.  Marvel Entertainment will show us what they have planned for 2013 and beyond; FUNimation will give us a peek at the anime titles they'll be bringing us soon; And Trion Worlds and Syfy will show us what it takes to make Defiance, a Living Transmedia World! Plus we've got panels from NASA, ComiXology, Xi3, and table top gaming with Geek & Sundry. Then we finish off the weekend with a live rock show featuring the Descendants of Erdrick, known for their covers of video game classics including The Legend of Zelda, Mega Man, Dragon Warrior, and Final Fantasy.

3:00pm – “Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic will be releasing its first major story update – “The Rise of the Hutt Cartel” – this spring. Come talk with the lead producers and lead designer of the game, to get your questions answered and to get a sneak peek at what’s next for SWTOR.

We’ll chat with Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus, Paul Bettner, creator of Words with Friends, Chris Roberts, creator Wing Commander and Star Citizen, and Cliff Blezinski, Design Director of Gears of War, about what VR means for the game industry. Topics will include whether VR is finally here, why developers should be excited, and what gamers should look forward to VR gaming.

Richard Garriott made history in October 2008 by becoming the first second-generation astronaut to fly to space when he traveled to the International Space Station. Today he’s one of the world’s leading experts on private/commercial space travel. Richard earned legendary status in the video game industry early in his career with his design of the Ultima role-playing games, one of the most successful computer game series ever. Today he is co-founder of Austin-based social and mobile game developer and publisher, Portalarium.

SATURDAY, MARCH 9

1:00pm“Crafting a Success: The Story of Minecraft”

Get the an inside look at all things Minecraft. It has been used to change many different things, from education to public space building projects in third world countries. The community has taken YouTube by storm creating everything imaginable within the game. Not to mention and entire economy of people making a living with the game. Join Mojang’s Director of Fun, Lydia Winters, for an interactive session all about the game you know and love, Minecraft.

2:00pm“Corridor Digital – Explode Into The Future”

The future of television of film is uncertain. That’s where Sam and Niko step in.
Their YouTube channel, CorridorDigital, gets millions of views releasing videogame inspired videos. They’ll discuss VFX, YouTube, the future of the long-form narrative, and the philosophy behind making popular videos.

Rock Band Dedicated to Video Game Classics
Descendants of Erdrick is a rock band dedicated to re-imagining the soundtracks of classic video games, specializing in covers of the “epic” role-playing/adventure genre of games. The band’s repertoire covers games ranging from The Legend of Zelda and Mega Man, to Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. Each instrumental “medley” of songs is aimed at engaging the listener and telling a story, often using sound effects and visuals alongside the music to establish a mood.
