Exorcist schoolgirls, secret agencies, swords, evil zombie like creatures, and tons of action, what else can you ask for?
Supernatural powers are on the loose in Tokyo and its up to an elite shadow agency to eliminate them where conventional forces have failed. Members of the Agency include exorcist sisters Yomi and Kagura who in their schoolgirl uniforms with their mystical swords, dispatch unholy demons expeditiously, all while chewing on Pocky snack sticks.
When an evil spirit possesses the exceptionally talented demon slayer Yomi, she goes on a killing spree that threatens the Agency as well as all of the citizens of Tokyo. Can Kagura summon the strength to fight and defeat her beloved sister?
Although the beginning of this series starts out slow, it does ramp up midway in. Armed with plenty of violent battle sequences and a supernatural story line, Ga-Rei-Zero does deliver some plot lines worth following. The character design isn’t anything special and their development leaves you wishing they weren’t so generic but Funimation’s English version voiceover production is decently good. If the anime series leaves you wanting more, it’s good to know that this 12-episode anime actually serves as a prequel to the manga series, Ga-rei, where the characters and story further get developed.
Funimation’s Ga-Rei-Zero Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Pack comes with an outer slipcase over a clear blue plastic Blu-Ray case. Both the slipcover and inner cover feature the same artwork on front, spine, and back. The plastic case holds five discs with the help of two swinging “page” holders. 3 DVDs and 2 Blu-Ray discs are included. The reverse side of the inner cover features alternate reversible artwork featuring Kagura and her spirit beast.
