Welcome back to the Weekly Comic Pull List! Let’s take a look at this week’s slate of upcoming issues, as well as a few of my picks for the week of Feb. 13th, 2013.
Dennis Hopeless’ somewhat controversial series continues as Marvel’s crop of young heroes face off! Arcade’s new Murderworld has already take a few casualties, and the survivors are still figuring out where they stand on this island of combatants, and who they should stand with. This series has been a bit of a sore spot for a lot of fans, while many theories have been constructed about the events taking place on the island that may put some ease into the hearts of those heartbroken fans. However you feel about the title, you can’t argue that it isn’t doing what it’s supposed to Fans are reading it to find out what’s happening with some of their favorite characters, and everyone else is reading it to see what all the fuss is about. I’m reading it because of Darkhawk, as I know others are. Why are you reading it?
One of two X-Force titles coming out of Marvel NOW!, Hopeless and Salvador Larroca continue to tell the story of Cable and his mutant team of outlaws. While we aren’t entirely sure why Cable and his team are outlaws, this issue we will learn more of why they are on the run, plus some more from the various members. I was pretty excited when I started this series, mainly due to my odd nerd love for Cable and old school X-Force. So Cable was an immediate sell, as was the inclusion of the Uncanny Avengers and some family squabbles between Alex and Nate, and by extension Hope Summers, who plays a large role in the series. The mystery of the series, not to mention the new facet of Cable’s premonitions and the failing powers of both Nate and Colossus have continued to impress me, and I highly recommend this book.
Dark Tower: The Gunslinger – Sheemie’s Tale
Secret Avengers makes its Marvel NOW! appearance with a new team and a new direction from Nick Spencer and Luke Ross! Led by the ‘new’ Nick Fury, the covert strike team will feature members like Hawkeye, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, Hulk, Maria Hill, Agent Coulson, and even the Hulk! Plus other members will be making their way through the team as the situation calls for it, much like the previous incarnation. This will be the first ongoing to feature Nick Fury Jr. and Agent Coulson, and I’m excited to see how the comic version of ‘Cheese’ Coulson lives up to the movie version. Not too mention some awesome superhero espionage with a twist, as apparently the missions are too dangerous for even the team members to know about them!
Uncanny X-Men #1 I have been waiting for the return of Uncanny X-Men for a while now, and this is tied for my most anticipated comic this week. The buildup of Cyclops’ team and his new dedication to saving mutantkind through whatever means necessary has been one of the high points from Bendis’ All-New X-Men. Mix that with Chris Bachalo’s pencils, who has always been a favorite X-artist of mine, and the original X-Men surely playing a role as young and old Cyclops are just building towards another explosive encounter. If there is one Marvel title you want to pick up this week, I would recommend UXM #1.
X-Treme X-Men #10
THE DEVIL IS REBORN. RENEWED. RESSURECTED. With new enemies, new friends and that same old “grinnin’ in the face of hell” attitude, the Man Without Fear is back and leading with his face! Mark Waid (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Irredeemable, RUSE) joins neo-legendary artists Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martin for a new, Eisner Award-winning spin on Daredevil that will leave you gasping for air. Having turned his world upside over the past several years, Matt Murdock realizes justice may not be blind to his past — and villains may not be the only ones looking for answers. Klaw, master of sound. The Megacrime cartel. Mole Man. The Black Cat. Bring it on! If Matt Murdock could see what he was doing…he’d be terrified.
In 1939, Timely Comics — precursor to modern Marvel — burst onto the scene with a wild and unmatched energy, populating the Golden Age of Comics with hundreds of new characters! Travel back to the Marvel Universe’s embryonic beginnings, and relive the dynamic debuts of the Sub-Mariner, Captain America, Laughing Mask, Ferret, Dynamic Man, Marvex, Black Marvel, Blazing Skull, Patriot, Young Allies, Whizzer, Rockman, Jack Frost, Destroyer, Witness, Miss America and more — plus the Golden Age incarnations of the Human Torch, Angel, Falcon, Black Widow and Vision!
And for my most anticipated comic of the week, the finale to Death of the Family is here! We finally get to figure out just what the hell is under that lid! If you don’t know what I’m talking about than you haven’t been reading anything from the Bat corner of the DC Universe, and experienced Joker’s first big moment in the New 52 from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. Over the past few months Joker has engaged in a war on the members of Batman’s entourage, and at the climax of the various series Joker presents the defeated members with a covered serving tray dripping with blood. The tension is killing me, considering Alfred has been missing for a while… but I don’t want to get ahead of myself. Take my money already, DC. Just take it.
Katana has been doing pretty well in the New 52, from her time with the Birds of Prey, and then graduating to the upcoming Justice League of America. She receives her own ongoing series from Ann Nocenti and Alex Sanchez, the first of two companion series to the Justice League of America alongside the upcoming Vibe series. The series follows mega martial artist Katana as she takes a leave from the BoP to investigate the clan who killed her husband. For those yet to read Birds of Prey, the soul of Katana’s deceased husband resides in the blade of her SoulSword, which might cause some problems in her dating life. I’m excited to see how the Outsiders (Katana’s pre-New 52 team) will fit into the series.
H’el on Earth keeps moving along as Supes and Supes and Supes deal with another survivor of Krypton’s destruction. As the ominous sounding Oracle moves closer to the Earth, Superboy faces off against the herald of Oracle while sporting the highly fashionable super suit of Superman. So far this crossover has been decidedly different from what I expected from a Superman family crossover, and a far cry from the crossovers of old, which are of course pre-New 52. This issue begins the finale of all the series involvement with H’el on Earth, but I’m sure it marks the beginning of a new relationship between all the bearers of the ‘S’ shield.
