Welcome back to the Weekly Comic Pull List! Let’s take a look at this week’s slate of upcoming issues, as well as a few of my picks for the week of Feb. 6th, 2013.
Marvel
The original class of X-Men is making some big waves in the modern Marvel U., brought to us by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen! This series has been a lot of fun to read so far, and seeing the original team dealing with the way of the world now is pretty amazing. Watching Jean take charge, and Cyclops of all kinds having issues with Wolverine, not to mention the changes to Beast and Kitty’s new role as “Professor K” have been a great ride so far, and in the new issue we get to see how some of the classic X-villains deal with the return of the Fab 5.
An entirely new direction for Iron Man begins here, led by Kieron Gillen and Greg Land! After he donned his brand new space armor last issue, I have been waiting to see Tony take to the stars and start encountering trouble all over the universe. Building up to the release of Guardians of the Galaxy #1 which will feature Iron Man as a member of the team, it is going to be a lot of fun watching him find his bearings away from Earth. Especially since he already seems to be well known and wanted for a crime he’s not even aware of!
Marvel’s Iron Man 3 Prelude #2
The world shattering series following the New Illuminati continues from Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting! As the Illuminati (Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Namor, Black Panther, Black Bolt, and Mr. Fantastic) decide to use the powerful Infinity Guantlet to save their Earth while possible dooming another they have to deal with issues among the group even as a new member shows up. This series has a ton of potential, and I am loving Black panther’s new attitude, new costume, and new role as the driving force behind this version of the Illuminati. The conflict between each member is just building up and I can’t wait to see the new addition to the team. Definitely give this series a chance if you haven’t yet.
One of the coolest fan service teams in the era of Marvel NOW! has to be Daniel Way and Steve Dillon’s Thunderbolts. Featuring a team of the best anti-hero military assassin wise-cracking head smashing characters currently running around and cleverly plotted by Way, with always perfect pencils by Dillon. Red Hulk, Venom, Punisher, Elektra, and Deadpool are still dealing with their first mission as a team, and as they encounter gamma powered villain Madman, things are about to get bumpy. This series seems to combine a lot of great elements from each of the character’s backstory, and their individual personalites are clashing with each others so well, that this book is just a fun read the whole way through.
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #20
X-Factor is one of the few titles left untouched by the Marvel NOW! campaign, which is just fine with me. If it ain’t broke, keep your renumbering and new creative teams AWAY FROM IT. Long time X-Factor scribe Peter David continues to deliver a perfect team book for the new age of comics, flush with history, great characters and even better stories, with Leonard Kirk impressing with his unique visuals and crisp pencils. The current story, which really ahs been ‘years in the making’, continues as X-Factor deals with all kinds of literal Hell, including former teammates switching sides. I’m looking at you, Strong Guy! And on a related note, David (who recently suffered a stroke) seems to be doing better, and any fans wishing to help out during this time can send well wishes and letters of support, or help out financially and go buy his books by clicking here for more info.

When Bob is framed for a terrorist act on American soil and hunted by the U.S. government, he and his best friend Deadpool go on the run in a heartfelt, soul-searching journey full of sex, drugs and unnecessary excessive violence! Two teams of mutants. Two tales of tragedy. The vicious Marauders have already slaughtered the tunnel-dwelling Morlocks; now, they plan to kill Cyclops’ estranged wife, Madelyne Pryor. Then, Storm embarks on a vision quest to find Forge – but when she discovers the evil Adversary pulling their strings, the X-Men must literally sacrifice their lives to stop him! Meanwhile, the New Mutants take in the hybrid creature known as Bird-Brain – but when he flees back to the island where he was created, the team follows and clashes with the Ani-Mator in a battle that will cost the young mutants one of their own! DC
The supernatural side of the DCNu keeps getting better as Rotworld heads to its conclusion this month! Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire have been building up to this event from the beginning of the New 52 with Animal Man and Swamp Thing both experiencing new heights of popularity. These characters who have both seen a bit of a slump from before Flashpoint, and I for one love the direction both series have taken. Lemire’s creative stories and in depth characterization have given me a new appreciation of Animal Man that I haven’t felt since Alan Moore brought him back from obscurity in the ’80s.The warriors of the Red and the Green fight to stop the Rot in this penultimate chapter of this epic crossover.
A new creative team and direction for the Emerald Archer as Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino take over! I have always loved Green Arrow, but I haven’t exactly been blown away by the New 52 version, and I feel it may be one of the weakest Justice League series. That is all looking to change as the newest creative team (out of many) brings Oliver back to his roots and starts exploring some of his past as ties between his father and the island he was stranded on comes to light. Also, while dealing with the recent loos of his company and fortune, Ollie encounters the archer known as Komodo! I really hope Lemire can bring the best parts of Ollie back to the series, because I was really starting to lose interest in the series I have always loved.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #30
One of the more interesting new series that features some of the more mysterious characters in the New 52 has to be Dan Didio’s The Phantom Stranger. Formerly Judas Iscariot, the Stranger continues on his path of forgiveness as one of the Trinity of Sin, alongside Pandora and the as yet unrevealed Question. As one of the few individuals who knows of the world before the New 52 and Flashpoint, the scope f this series might prove to be pretty important to the rest of the DCNu, and in this issue we’ll see the Stranger use his inner Liam neeson as he hunts his missing family. His particular set of skills will put him into confrontation with both Pandora and the Spectre, so I wouldn’t miss this issue!
