The original city smashing monster is back.
Godzilla plans to make a return to cinemas around the world next year with a new look and attitude that pays homage to the classic films of the ’50s, while bringing new fans into the fold. Today we get our first look at the film with a new Godzilla trailer.
British director Gareth Edwards wrote and directed this big budget reboot with an eye towards making the iconic monster as epic and fantastic as possible. Edwards transports his audience to a world where real people have to deal with the frightening realization that we are not alone, and our new neighbors are beasts we may unfortunately have had a hand in creating.
The trailer opens with soldiers conducting a HALO jump down through spooky atmospheric clouds falling towards a shattered city where, in the flash of an eye, they are just barely able to make out the monster which, while redesigned, retains many of the beast’s original characteristics. If Edwards’ goal was to make the old ’50s man in a rubber suit idea seem more realistic, then by all accounts, he appears to have succeeded. Clearly Edwards’ experience with the indie film Monsters prepared him for this big-budget radioactive lizard fest.
The film has also started a viral campaign through the M.U.T.O. Research site that offers short videos and clues about the upcoming movie. Pretty smart stuff for diehard fans of the mega lizard, and we certainly love to see in-depth viral campaigns (Slusho, anyone?).
Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Stathairn, Ken Watanabe, Juliet Binoche, and Sally Hawkins.
The movie hits theaters on May 16, 2014.
