This summer, the movie-going public was wowed by Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, but it looks like 2014 will have a monster movie of its own with the upcoming Godzilla.
The teaser trailer for the Gareth Edwards helmed remake has leaked onto the web, and it looks absolutely smashing.
The trailer lingers over scenes of destruction with a voice over from J. Robert Oppenheimer, setting a bleak tone for the film. It’s fitting as the original Godzilla was closely related to Japan’s experience with nuclear weapons. As the so called ‘father of the atomic bomb’, Oppenheimer’s words are a chilling reminder of the potential horrors for the effects of nuclear weapons, and the fantasies that we pull from them.
This trailer makes us sit up and pay more attention to this upcoming film. Edwards, whose first film Monsters provided an interesting take on Kaiju, has already demonstrated his ability to put together an excellent story and visuals on a low budget. Already it’s looking like he’s the right man for the job, and that this version of Godzilla won’t be just another mindless remake.
Kaiju movies seem like they’re on the verge of being the next big thing. Pacific Rim performed fairly well at the summer box office, and has a sequel being written, along with the recent announcement that SyFy has picked up, Creature At Bay, a pilot from Bryan Singer, which has us interested. Godzilla is a household name across the world, and we’ve got little doubt that with this teaser as an opening glimpse, it is going to be one of the major summer tent pole films to watch in 2014.
Godzilla is set to be released on May 16, 2014, and stars a fantastic cast of actors, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen and Ken Watanabe.
