The last we heard of Fox's upcoming Batman-themed procedural Gotham, was that Jada Pinkett-Smith, Ben McKenzie, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor and Donal Logue had joined the cast. Now the cast has been rounded out with the actors playing Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle.
David Mazouz, best known for his role as Jake in the Fox show, Touch, will play the young heir to the Wayne empire and the future Batman. As expected, the series will begin with the murders of Bruce’s parents, the pivotal point in his life that sends him down the path to become Batman.
The one role that might not be expected is Selina Kyle. She will be played by Carmen Bicondova. You won’t know Bicondova as an actress, but you might remember her as a dancer on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Selina has been described as “a teenage orphan who is suspicious and wholly unpredictable. A street thief and skilled pickpocket, she’s dangerous when cornered.”
Here’s a question: Why does a young Selina have to be in this iteration of the Batman mythos? Meeting her already, as if she was a part of Bruce’s life when he was a kid, seems really incongruous to Batman lore. This is what can be annoying about prequels; there’s always the temptation to jam any and all characters in there in the hopes of making the fans happy. But, then again, this is a different version of Bruce’s life – sort of. So…whatever. Frankly, this show seems like it could be a bit of a mess, but it could all come together. We won’t know for sure until the actual pilot comes out.
The pilot is written by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist) and will also serve as executive producer. Danny Cannon is directing.
