No one was really sure what to think when Marvel announced the news that Guardians of the Galaxy would be their new film release for 2014.
Director James Gunn seemed just like the quirky choice of director Marvel would go for, despite his unfamiliarity with the big-budget scene. No one was sure on the tone or nature of the movie other than it would take its influence from the comic run written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
Now the dust has settled and critics and fans alike can all agree that a film that made close to $94 million dollars in its opening weekend is not a movie to be sniffed at. The sequel announcement as well as plenty of talk about the after credits sting has kept Guardians of the Galaxy in people’s minds. But there is one other thing that has kept fans entertained after the credits have rolled and that is the copious amount of collectibles Marvel has put out in support of this movie. So we have taken it upon ourselves to give you a selection of the more exciting products out there that fans of the movie might need for their collections.
First off we have Hot Toys, who have taken a selection of some of the Guardians and created some incredible sculpted collectibles. These 1/6th scale figures include the dynamic pairing of Rocket Raccoon and angry Groot, relaxed Groot, Star Lord and Gamora. With each figure having up to 30 points of articulation and boasting some incredible life-like sculpts, these are the must have items for action figure fans. Gamora especially will blow people away by the sheer amount of detail that has gone into getting actress Zoe Saldana likeness into plastic. The figure is a spot on representation of her movie character. As a bonus most of these figures come with interchangeable hands and in some cases, heads.
If you prefer figures that are slightly smaller and more animated looking, then there are numerous collectibles out there which may be more to your liking. The Funko Wacky Wobbler series (or bobble heads if you like) have a whole heap of Guardians available. Selling at around $15.99, you can get Star-Lord or Rocket Raccoon.
Also from Funko you have the POP! Collection which is another line of bobble heads covering all the Guardians and showing them in the unique Funko POP! Style. These range from $9.99 to $19.99. The Groot figure in this range looks amazingly fun.
Not to be outdone in the cute competition, Minimates have their own collection of Guardians figures which covers not only the Guardians, but other characters like the Nova Corps members and Ronan the Accuser. You can buy all 9 figures for $119.98 or in 2 pack sets for $9.99.
LEGO unsurprisingly also have some sets out, and as per usual they have just the right elements to excite both children and adults alike. The Milano Spaceship Rescue set comes with Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Ronan and a Sakaaran as well as the bits and pieces to make the Milano spaceship. This set costs $74.99.
There is also the Starblaster Showdown which comes with a Sakaaran, Star-Lord and a Nova Corps member ($19.99). And finally Knowhere Escape Mission, which comes with Nebula, a Sakaaran and the most exciting news of all, Rocket Raccoon and Groot ($39.99)!
Here is a look at the figures out of their boxes and a sneak peak at the SDCC exclusive figure The Collector.
Now speaking of the San Diego Comic Con, they have had a great many special edition releases, but the one that will catch Guardians of the Galaxy fans attention has to be the incredibly well made (but perhaps slightly odd) Rocket Raccoon character mug. Costing around $74.99 it has quite a devilish looking Rocket ready for you to drink the beverage of your choice out of his head.
ArtFX have their own take on Rocket as they have put out a 1:10 Rocket Raccoon statue hanging on to his partner in mischief Groot. $54.99 gets you this 5 3/5 inches tall statue which has some nice sculpting work done on it by Kotobukiya.
Perhaps one of the weirder entries on this list (though at this time I cannot confirm if they are official or not) is the collection of Guardians of the Galaxy costumes you can purchase. If the prospect of dressing up as your favorite Guardian seems appealing then you can pick up everything you need from Costume Craze.
Prices range from $20 – $60 depending on sizes and also if you want just the mask or an actual full suit. So this Halloween while your child dresses up in an adorable Rocket Raccoon outfit, you can stand right beside them wearing your very own Star Lord suit. You don’t even need to have a child, because a Star Lord costume is suitable for any fandom fan event!
If it is something more official that you are looking for then why not check out Hasbro’s slightly creepy (but bound to be a lot of fun) Rocket Raccoon mask. This mask has a feature that can be activated when you move your jaw, meaning the Rocket mask can actually move its mouth and ears as well as its eyebrows. This retails for about $19.99.
For an extra $50 you can also get a Rocket Raccoon NERF gun based on the gun from the movie.
But if you fancy being someone more human based, but want to pay the same amount of money, then you can always buy a Star Lord mask and you get your own blaster to boot.
Toys R Us have an exclusive Rocket Raccoon plush figure which is as close as you are ever going to get to giving a Raccoon a hug. For collectors it’s a great little piece that retails at about $19.99. There is also a variant edition that was released at the SDCC this year which sold for $35.00 and had Rocket in his Ravager gear from the movie. Both of these figures will look superb next to last year’s NYCC release of the comic book version of Rocket.
Now as you can see there is a glaring omission from this collection which needs to be rectified. SPOILER ALERT. Where the heck is our dancing Grott figure? Now sites like Etsy have already jumped on this, making their own unofficial versions. However what we really want is an official release of the dancing Groot we all know and love. Surprisingly it seems that Marvel has already gotten onto this themselves and according to this tweet we could be seeing one very soon. Below is also an image from the Guardians of the Galaxy collectible line which shows a very familiar looking shadow of Groot in its bonus accessories section. Whether this is a dancing one, or just a figure is unknown at this time.
For everyone who's asked me about a dancing [spoiler-free] #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy toy–we've been discussing for months. No info yet!

So overall we have a fine selection of items coming our way due to the success of the movie and probably many more to come after this. Who knows what we will get in the future. The Collectors coat? Drax’s knife letter openers? Maybe even some novelty shaped Guardians of the Galaxy Haribos. The possibilities are endless. Be sure to be listening to your mixtape while waiting to find out more and keep reading Geek to find out the news on even more blockbuster collectible releases as they arrive.
