We have been waiting for this highly anticipated trailer since we first saw the brief teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy at CCI 2013, and it doesn't disappoint.
Marking the first and so far only non-Avengers movie from Marvel Studios, Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) AKA Star-Lord and his crew of
renegades guardians as they cause fix trouble in the galaxy. Joined by Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, and Drax the Destroyer (Chris Bautista), along with Rocket Raccoon and Groot (voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively), the team will usher in the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe which was first glimpsed in the after credit scenes of both The Avengers (which introduced Thanos) and Thor: The Dark World (which introduced Benicio del Toro as The Collector and gave us our first mention of the Infinity Gems).
Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely the wild card of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Two, which is why it’s so exciting to finally see some official footage. Fans of the various comic series of the same name are definitely going to be excited to see the film adaptation, but those that aren’t quite aware of the Guardians adventures
As usual the first trailer was preceded by a very interesting teaser that seems to focus on Peter Quill while hyping up the full length trailer. We’ll check that out first:
Quick looks at Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer and Karen Gillan as Nebula, but just enough to tantalize us for the full length. For a first official look it’s not bad for 15 seconds, but thankfully we didn’t have to wait long for more,as the trailer premiered tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live:
From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team–the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand–with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
Given the recent revelations of the post-credit scene of Thor: The Dark World, we would speculate the orb Quill steals will play a larger role in the ongoing development of the Infinity Gems, as will Thanos’ presumed involvement in the film. The trailer is definitely not short on action, and the humor that made the series so strong is thankfully going to be a huge part of the film, something Marvel is certainly no stranger too.
Hopefully we will get to see more of Glenn Close and John C. Reilly as Commander Rael and Rhomann Dey respectively, high-ranking members of the Nova Corps. And we still have yet to see Michael Rooker as Yondu or Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, but for a first trailer we are pretty thrilled with it. .
While we have seen the look of the characters with earlier released images and the teaser, the upcoming toy line was also revealed at this year’s Toy Fair, which allowed us a bit of closer scrutiny on the design of the characters.
