At today's Xbox One event, Microsoft announced Steven Spielberg would be the executive producer on a live action Halo television series, exclusive to the Xbox One:
This comes after 343 Industries launched a successful webisode series, Forward Unto Dawn, in conjunction with the release of Halo 4 in 2012. While a Halo motion picture has eluded theaters over the years, with directors Niell Blomkamp and Guillermo del Toro attached at points to direct. Spielberg has expressed an interest in directing an adaptation in the past, and it appears that he will now have his chance to do so.
Via a pre-recorded message during the event, Spielberg stated, “For me, the ‘Halo’ universe is an amazing opportunity to be at the intersection where technology and myth-making meet to produce something really groundbreaking. And I’m incredibly excited about the great journey we’re all on, the heroes’ worlds, and wonders that Halo will take us on.”
Halo has long been tied to the Xbox platform, and it comes as no surprise that the game will continue forward with the new iteration of the gaming console moving forward. It will be interesting to see just how Microsoft will use the show as a way to develop its own entertainment ecosystem, and it appears that it will be the first step towards moving the console past a purely gaming device and more towards a general entertainment delivery system.
Given the popularity of the game and its online multiplayer, Microsoft is clearly ready to provide more Halo to meet demand along a number of mediums, and that, in our books, is a good thing. Bungie, and now 343 Industries, have expertly shepherded the franchise to new heights, and hopefully, they will continue to do so.
