The world of cosplay has long been seen as filled with dorks, nerds, and yes, even geeks. Despite those who participate in the hobby spending untold amounts of both money and time on their creations, cosplay hasn't had a real moment in the sun... until now.
Heroes of Cosplay is a new show on SyFy that looks into the world of cosplay by following nine people who go a little bit further than drawing an “S” on a t-shirt. Oh no, these people spend a good amount of time designing their costumes, then through impressive work in sewing, building, and makeup, bring their creations to life.
Heroes of Cosplay follows the nine series stars – Yaya Han, Riki LeCotey (Riddle), Monika Lee, Victoria Schmidt, Chloe Dykstra, Jessica Merizan, Holly Conrad, Becky Young, Jesse Lagers – as they go through the creative process starting from the first imagining of the costume to the actual competition at various conventions.
As is with many reality shows, there has been a bit of backlash regarding what some viewers have seen as “manufactured drama”. This isn’t horribly unexpected given the penchant for such things in the world of television today, but it appears as if fans of cosplay in general were hoping to avoid it. However, in a world where personal branding and social media carry as much, if not more weight than the costumes themselves, one would think drama would be part and parcel.
The show airs on SyFy on Tuesday nights at 10/9c.
