The saga of Batman vs. Superman (the unofficial title for the still untitled film) continues with some news concerning Holly Hunter.

If you aren’t caught up on the whole Batman vs. Superman movie production, Warner Bros. announced last week that Callan Mulvey, Tao Okamoto, and Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona, Saving Grace) will not only be joining the cast, but will be playing original characters. According to Latino Review however, Hunter’s role has been revealed – she’ll be playing Leslie Thompkins. Or, if not actually Leslie herself, a Leslie-like replacement character.

For those of you out there who haven’t read a lot of the comics, but have seen every cartoon and movie including Batman, Leslie did make an appearance in Batman: The Animated Series. This would mark the first time she has cropped up at all outside the comics, leaving many without any frame of reference for her as a character.

The character in the comics is a doctor and really close friend to Bruce Wayne’s father. After Bruce’s parents died, Leslie acted as a surrogate parental figure and, as once he grows up into Batman, she becomes a confidant and warns him against his more extreme traits. She’s also like Batman’s impromptu doctor, treating him for injuries that he couldn’t go to the hospital for.

Latino Review is right to describe her as a “female Alfred,” cause of her importance to Bruce and some of the duel roles she and Pennyworth share. Alfred will be played by Jeremy Irons in the movie, so will Leslie have enough room to be a full character since she will be sharing parental influence with Alfred? To put it another way, is this news about Leslie making you any more excited about the film?

There are still some people who aren’t too happy about Ben Affleck playing Batman and every time news comes out about the film, there’s always a little bit of apprehensive griping heard around the internet. If you’re a holdout, does news of Leslie joining the cast of characters make you less apprehensive?

There’s still plenty of time for more news to come out about Batman vs. Superman, so eventually, we’ll be able to figure out more about Leslie (or her doppelganger) and how she’ll relate to Bruce and Alfred. What do you think about this news? Discuss it in the comments section below.
