IDW will once again be providing an avenue for Star Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to expand the universe of their film. A group of talented writers & illustrators - Kurtzman, Orci, J.J. Abrams, Tim Jones and David Messina - came together to create a comic miniseries that led directly into the events of 2009's Star Trek. Today it was announced that Star Trek Into Darkness will be getting the same treatment.
A new 4-issue miniseries entitled Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness will debut in January. It was written by Mike Johnson with a story by Kurtzman & Orci. The book’s plot remains a mystery. All that the press release announcing it revealed in regards to the story was that it will “bridge the gap between the two films” and give “an exclusive peek at the film’s mysterious story.” Not much to go on, is it? Luckily we won’t have to wait too long before it’s released.
“We were thrilled by the reception that the original Countdown prequel comic received in 2009,” says Johnson. “We’re excited to be working again with David Messina and the team at IDW to bring fans an all-new original story that leads directly into the next film. Star Trek is back in a big way in 2013!”
