Joss Whedon is coming back to television. Following the success of 2012's The Avengers, ABC television announced that it has officially picked up the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D for a series, taking place in the same universe.

Centered around the resurrected Agent Coulson (Clarke Gregg), the show will also be starring Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge as agents in the mysterious organization named Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. The pilot was filmed in January 2013, written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and directed by Joss Whedon.

Here’s the synopsis from Entertainment Weekly:

Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven’t been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They’ll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

This news has us pretty excited. Since the pilot’s production, Disney has cautioned that the show might not be picked up. Given the ridiculous amount of money The Avengers and Iron Man III have made in the last year, it seems crazy not to go forward with something like this, and take advantage of the attention that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been getting. A weekly show seems like it would be the perfect way to keep the upcoming movies in everyone’s mind, and it will be interesting to see how they cross them over with the films, and if we’ll see any of the major superheroes making cameo appearances. At the very least, it would be great to see a few minor Marvel character appearances peppered throughout the series.

Which Marvel heroes or villains would you like to see show up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
