Over the weekend, it was revealed that Super director James Gunn is at the top of Marvel Studios’ list of potential directors for Guardians of the Galaxy.
Should Gunn land the gig, this will be the first time he has helmed a big budget film from a major studio. The director’s past efforts include films that are quite a bit more gruesome than the typical Marvel fair, but, his ability to merge horror, comedy and action is reportedly what attracted the studio to him. Oh, he also wrote the script for the Scooby-Doo film, which brought him a bit of mainstream success.
Marvel and Gunn are currently in negotiations. Peyton Reed (Yes Man) and the team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Half Nelson, It’s Kind of a Funny Story) reportedly round out the studio’s list of candidates for the gig, so, if Gunn passes, one of them could end up with the gig.
Out of the three choices, Gunn, with his Joss-like sensibilities, seems to be the person best suited to direct the film. I would be interested in seeing what Fleck and Boden would do with the property, though. What do you all think?
Guardians of the Galaxy is currently scheduled to be released on August 1, 2014.
