A few weeks ago, we (along with every other blog) mentioned that James Gunn was reportedly in negotiations with Marvel Studios to direct the Guardians of the Galaxy film. Turns out those reports were true; today, on his official Facebook page, Gunn confirmed that he is helming the film.
“…last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy,” reads Gunn’s announcement. “As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique.”
As I mentioned in my post about Gunn potentially directing the film, I believe he’s the ideal man for the job. While his films tend to be grimmer than the average Marvel Studios production, he has a great deal of enthusiasm for the property and enough nerd-friendly talents to make something worthwhile. It will be interesting to see what he does with an impressive budget behind him.
Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to be released in August 2014.
