With the hype over the new version of Godzilla in full swing, it seemed fitting to look at Johnny Express, a short feature that shows what would happen if humans were giant sized and equally as clumsy as that giant, radiated monster is.
Johnny Express is a short feature created by animator Kyungmin Woo (who also wrote and directed) which has been released through Alfred Image Works. Below is the synopsis for the short, with the actual film available to watch below.
It’s 2150. There are all sorts of Aliens living throughout space. Johnny is a Space Delivery Man who travels to different planets to deliver packages. Johnny is lazy and his only desire is to sleep in his autopilot spaceship. When the spaceship arrives at the destination, all he has to do is simply deliver the box. However, it never goes as planned. Johnny encounters strange and bizarre planets and always seems to cause trouble on his delivery route. Will he be able to finish his mission without trouble?
Taking the best elements of all the monster movies out there, as well as a few disaster movies for good measure, this short manages to combine the cute and the horrific perfectly. Genocide has never looked this cute before. The way Johnny’s actions have massive consequences on the planets residents is fascinating to watch as well as fun in a sick kind of way. Even though Johnny does deliver his package, all of his actions manage to make that a moot point.
The design of Johnny is great. He looks like a trucker crammed into a shiny spacesuit, his lovely ship covered in litter which just goes to show that this man is not exactly concerned about professionalism! He reminded me of the maintenance crew stationed on the Nostromo ship (from Alien). He just wants to get a wage and get home.
Unlike those workers however, Johnny’s idleness spreads not only throughout his ship but also his mission, and his lack of attention ultimately kills off an entire race. An alien race as it happens, that look a little like the mascots for the 2012 London Olympics.
The humor in this short is well constructed, with some great scenes of the poor non-English speaking aliens muttering about the utter devastation. The scene where the alien family’s home is ripped open with them looking shockingly on is a real treat. Though it is a comedy, there is some real drama here watching these small creatures suffer. The sheer scale of disaster caused by Johnny’s foot and his drinks can is on par with the devastation any Kaiju monster could create.
Combine this with some great visuals and a sense of fun amidst sheer chaos, and you have an entertaining short for the whole family. For more information on Alfred Image Works why not have a look at their Youtube page and hopefully we will see some more shorts from Mr. Woo in the near future.
