We have been wondering for a while who would be taking on the role of Thanos, the Mad Titan first glimpsed in the mid-credit scene of The Avengers, and the role has been cast!
Lng rumored to be the big baddie in the third Avengers film, Thanos has almost haunted the MCU since his first appearance. Originally played by Damion Poitier in the brief teaser that got so many fan tongues wagging, Thanos’ presence in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy was pretty much guaranteed by James Gunn as a connective tissue between GotG and The Avengers 3, so we have been patiently waiting to see who will be taking on the iconic role.
The wait is over, as it was revealed today that Josh Brolin has been cast as Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy. Brolin is no stranger to comic book movies, having starred in Jonah Hex and the upcoming Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, and there is no doubt he will be able to bring the depth and menace to the character. Obviously there will be a lot of CG/makeup/prosthetics involved when bringing Thanos to life, so it will interesting to see how much of Brolin makes it into the character in GotG.
It’s still unclear how Thanos will factor into Guardians of the Galaxy, but we can certainly speculate. With much of Marvel’s Phase One revolving around the Tesseract (and the heroes, I guess), and the introduction of the Aether in Thor: The Dark World, we are seeing a number of powerful items appearing around the MCU. We can also expect another item of power to show up in Guardians of the Galaxy, along with The Collector (played by Benicio del Toro) who appears to be working for the Mad Titan. These items of power are known to comics fans as the Infinity Gems, which when put together form the Infinity Gauntlet, which grants the wearer control over the universe itself.
Of course, Thanos has long been in search of the Infinity Gems in order to appease his love, Death, so we can expect even a small appearance by Thanos in GotG to revolve around these items of power, The Collector, or Death herself.
What do you think of Josh Brolin in the role? Are you excited to see Thanos make his way through the MCU over the next few films? Let us know on the GEEK Facebook page or in the comments below!
