Killer Instinct and its revival on the Xbox One was an awesome nostalgic gift from the developers at Double Helix Games.
Longtime followers of the 90′s fighting game scene rejoiced at the sight of returning characters, Ultra Combos and so much more. Season 1 of this downloadable fighter has come to a close. If we were to judge it by TV show standards, we’d give this season a solid 8 out of 10. Double Helix did a fine job making sure gamers got their money’s worth with a great dose of added content.
Now that Double Helix Games has handed the reigns for Killer Instinct over to Iron Galaxy Studios, a new season is heading our way. Here’s the top 10 additions we’d love to see for Killer Instinct’s Season 2.
10. A Port of Killer Instinct Gold
Microsoft and Double Helix Games threw us a bone when they gave us a port of the original Killer Instinct right next to the 2013 reboot. Now that the 2nd season of this fighter is upon us, we’d be very thankful to get another port of a fighting game classic – Killer Instinct Gold. The new characters that got introduced in this sequel were cool additions and the N64 update packed on even more replay value with new game modes. It’s time to offer another history lesson to those who don’t know nothin’ bout that KI Gold.
9. Throwback Stages
See that pic right there? Do you feel the tears of nostalgia starting to welt in your eyes? How incredibly hype would you be if Iron Galaxy Studios managed to offer gamers a modern reinvention of that rooftop arena? Seeing this stage along with new renditions of T.J. Combo’s gym, Riptor’s bloody chamber or Kim Wu’s snow capped dojo would be so awesome! And we know that Thunder’s stage received a few changes for the 2013 reboot, but we wouldn’t mind if the Chief’s original bridge made a comeback too.
8. A Tag Team Mode
When Mortal Kombat got revived during the past generation of consoles, old school fans and newcomers rejoiced. One of the best modes in this title that kept us and our gamer buddies up ’til the wee hours of the morning was the Tag Team mode. Two against two. Awesome team combos and setups. Several moments of exciting back and forth gameplay between a team of NetherRealm kombatants (you know why we spelled that with a K, right?). Killer Instinct is insane as it is with one on one fights. It would be a total mindf#$k with tag team battles! Sparks flying everywhere and tag team combos from Jago and Orchid? WE WANT ALL OF THAT!
7. Ultimate Combos (No Mercy’s) for Every Character
Somehow, someway we managed to face off with Arcade Mode’s TRUE boss, Shadow Jago. And (SURPRISE, SURPRISE!) we totally got owned. What really put the nail in our character’s coffin though was Shadow Jago’s No Mercy maneuver. Our jaws hit the floor and our hearts ached just a little bit more than usual. Now that we’ve seen one No Mercy in action, we want to do one ourselves with the rest of the roster. How about Glacius turning you into a frozen sculpture of yourself and then smashing you into tiny icy bits? Or Sadira locking you into her web and clawing you into oblivion? Everyone should get their own No Mercy now, we say,
6. Another New Character
Sadira brought a whole new way of playing to the Killer Instinct meta-game with her moves that relied on the use of jumps and dives. After taking the time to learn the in’s and out’s of her mechanics, we became fans of her extra mobility and web-based attacks. We’re ready for a second round of KI characters, which means we’re looking to see another brand new addition to the roster. How about a Tae Kwon Do master? What about a master weapons wielder who specializes in the use of a staff? Or even a mystical shaman with healing powers? Get creative on us with this request, Iron Galaxy!
If you know anything about the sequel to the original KI, it’s this – that game featured a bunch of cool new fighters. One of them was the Amazonian warrior known as Maya. Her swift flip kicks and double bladed fighting style made her one of the more agile fighters on the roster, plus her overall design gave us some serious Xena: Warrior Princess vibes. Maya needs to be reborn in this new era of fighting game awesomeness, which is why we’d like to see her make a return to the KI tournament.
4. Kim Wu
Here’s another lady from KI2 that we’d love to take control of once again – the lovely Kim Wu. We could totally imagine Miss Wu being the perfect female counterpart that Jago needs to keep him on his toes. Kim Wu is a martial arts expert who knows how to deal some massive damage with her flail weapon and quick split kicks. She’s fast, she’s beautiful and she’s ready to take out Maya once again. Let’s get her back into battle form, Iron Galaxy!
Sabrewulf may have covered the “vicious animal” archetype in the 1st season of KI, but someone else should fit that criteria for the 2nd season character offerings. Everyone’s favorite Ultratech manufactured reptile menace Riptor must be reborn! This dude would look incredible and play like a dream (and a nightmare to face) if he got the OK to enter the new KI. We’ve been dying to slash our opponents into shreds and tail whip them into a bloody pulp with Riptor ever since the 2013 KI reboot was announced. It’s about time this lizard re-entered the arena.
Where there’s fire, there’s bound to be ice lingering nearby. Glacius is a pretty formidable projectile focused fighter that we’ve grown accustomed to. But now it’s time that he faced someone out of his element – the flame fueled being called Cinder! We can totally imagine a refreshingly modern overhaul of Cinder’s appearance and play style. We don’t want to see him become a re-skinned version of Glacius. Cinder needs his own rebooted look and much cooler looking fire-based attacks. That stream of fire he used to send out would look pretty damn hot in the new KI, right?
1. T.J. Combo
When you say the words “Killer” and “Instinct” together, three things come to mind – Jago, Ultra Combos and that boxer dude who used to roll into your kneecaps. OH! His name was T.J. Combo and he was definitely one of of our favorite fighters from the old games. Killer Instinct’s Season 2 should make sure that T.J. is the 1st addition to make it’s way via the next downloadable update. Every great fighting game needs a badass boxer, correct? T.J.’s one of the best. His retooled Ultra Combo would be complete madness and his in-your-face play style would make him one of the most fun fighters to go online with. T.J. COMBO NEEDS A COMEBACK!
