Let’s Be Cops: New Trailers Shake Up Buddy Cop Trope

Featured Image

There was a time when buddy cop films were about cops that eventually became buddies. But what about a buddy cop film that is about cops that aren't cops? A new twist on a classic trope, right?

Let’s Be Cops stars Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson – both from Fox’s hit comedy New Girl - as two bumbling friends who dress as police officers for a costume party and become instant neighborhood stars. But little do they know that their stint as the guys of the hour will become a lot more serious when they get tied up in a tangled web of dirty detectives and the mobsters they run with. It’s up to the two fools to live up to their costumes and save the day.

It certainly looks like a low-brow comedy, which isn’t necessarily a condemnation, but it’s not exactly a glowing review of it either. The trailer doesn’t even show a snippet of the actual crime the two guys get roped up in, which is a little disheartening. To be fair, this could just be a terrible trailer, but basically, if you like low-brow comedies, then this is your bag. If you want your comedies to have more meat to them, then you will probably not be impressed by this trailer. However, check out the green band trailer below if you want to see how the film strikes you.

The red band trailer is a little bit better, only because the jokes in the film aren’t cut off for green band standards. However, there’s not that much change. Watch it for yourself.

The jury might be out on whether the trailers are funny enough, but Let’s Be Cops has some other big name actors in it aside from Johnson and Wayans. Let’s Be Cops also stars Nina Dobrev, Andy Garcia, James D’Arcy, Rob Riggle and Keegan-Michael Key. There is some serious comedic talent in this film, so that’s something. At the very least, fans of New Girl might want to give the film a shot, seeing how the two leads are two of the show’s main characters. Let’s Be Cops comes to theaters August 13.

So, did you think the trailer was funny or stupid? Give your opinions in the comments section below!
