Darren Rawlings' Little Friends take a look at some similar costumed characters from the Marvel and DC universe in a fun and fantastic way.
Comic characters tend to share certain characteristics. The Golden Age of heroes helped set the standard superhero image, as well as giving us some of the archetypal powers most heroes share today. So it is no real surprise that the Big Two (Marvel and DC), tend to share character powers and in some cases even costume designs. These similarities have not gone unnoticed in the fandom community either, and artist Darren Rawlings has certainly taken note of this. Taking this on board he has created his own take on the big two characters.
Rawlings has his own studio called Thinkmore (which specialises in different types of art styles), but he has also found the time to create his own superhero artwork. Called Little Friends, this series of pieces is comprised of cute versions of Marvel and DC characters. The artwork highlights how alike the companies characters are, but also manages to say that, even though they may look similar, they can still all be friends. The complete collection has 30 different Marvel and DC pairings which is slightly too many to cram into this article, but below are some of Geek‘s personal favourites.
Darren’s work looks like the melding of DC Comics own Li’l Gotham series and Skottie Young’s work on Marvel Babies. These styles combine and mix with Darren’s own blend of art design, to create a perfectly cute concoction. There is also an element of humour here, like Catwoman and the Black Cat chasing after a ball of wool, or the Crocodile Dundee quote at the bottom of the “Captain Boomerang and Boomerang” piece.
I am slightly surprised that the Sentry did not get a mention in the Superman, Gladiator and Hyperion meeting though. Creating these character styles seems to be Darren’s forte, because he also has a collection of artwork called Little Heroes. This line of 22 pieces covers characters from all over the fandom universe including adorable versions of such well known characters as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the fighters from Street Fighter and the Transformers.
Darren’s work can be seen on his DeviantArt page, where these collections can be seen in full and savoured at your leisure.
