You probably use your iPhone or iPad to do practically everything. The days of writing down tons of future reminders for upcoming family gatherings on Post-It notes are coming to an end, now that you can power up your tablet and jot down everything onto it.

LiveScribe knows this, which is why they’ve released several “smartpen” gadgets that make this task much simpler. LiveScribe has recently developed and released a brand new model in its series of iPhone/iPad compatible smartpens – the LiveScribe 3 Smartpen.

This latest piece of smartpen technology does away with some of the features that were available with previous models – the digital pen display, microphone and speaker parts have been wiped away in favor of making this edition much improved and easier to understand. Now it appears just like any regular pen that you use on an everyday basis. This clears away the barrier of entry that some folks may be scared to cross. Its streamlined appearance should make any non-tech head or super geek comfortable.

The LiveScribe 3 Smartpen works in conjunction with the LiveScribe+ mobile app. Special pieces of Starter Dot Paper Notebook sheets come with your new smartpen, which is the only way you can transfer any of your written notes to your digital devices. The cool factor is quickly apparent with this device – all you have to do is start writing and anything you jot down will immediately pop up on the screen while the appropriate app is open. According to LiveScribe, up to 20,000 pages of notes can be stored onto your smartpen. The next time you sync up your pen and your smartphone/tablet, those notes will easily transfer on over.  A device like this is perfect for busy workers on the go and musicians who just want to save their lyrics with a much safer option.

One of the newer add-on’s to this smartpen device is the Feed View. This feature helps divide your notes into “micronotes,” which are then put on display into an easy to follow timeline. You can delete any of them as you wish. You can also convert your written micronotes into digital text just by swiping. You can then prioritize your micronotes into calender events/reminders, as well as new contacts, addresses, texts etc. This improvement for the LiveScribe 3 Smartpen is a godsend.

The LiveScribe 3 smartpen is a great gadget that makes the lives of serious note takes much easier, but it still has a few faults. The pen is a tad bit too large, with a thickness that may become an issue for folks who find the smartpen unwieldy. It lasts for close to 14 hours of note taking, but its size may deter users from writing for prolonged periods. Hopefully the fourth iteration of this smartpen loses a few pounds and comes in a more slim, attractive model.

All in all, the LiveScribe 3 Smartpen is one of the more unique and accessible digital note taking gadgets on the market. As far as smartpens go, this is one of the best.

If you’re looking to utilize the LiveScribe 3 Smartpen, make sure you have an iPhone 4S or another recent model. As for iPad users, you’ll have to have a iPad 3 generation or a similar recent model. Users must also download and install the Livescribe+ mobile app. Android device support is also coming soon.
