Luke Evans dons the fangs and cape to become one of pop-culture's most famous villains in the new Dracula Untold trailer.
The story follows real-life historical figure Prince Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) of Transylvania, as his wife and child find themselves in danger from a despicable and brutal ruler. He risks his very soul to save them. The mortal Prince Vlad essentially makes a deal with the devil in order to save the ones he loves and is thus “cursed” to a life as the Crown Prince of Darkness, Dracula.
The trailer runs the gamut of all the typical blockbuster-bases: tons of CGI, brooding grit, and an incredible amount of line-shouting. However, it does end up looking better than expected with an effective cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Lorde, a solid cast, and just enough fresh visual aspects and pacing to warrant a spot on your calendar for the month of October (just in time for Halloween).
Newcomer Gary Shore will make his feature-film debut after a 2005 horror short film titled The Draft. Allowing an inexperienced director to helm such a large production has been hit-and-miss in Hollywood as of late. Given the film’s $100 million price tag, can Shore handle the massive task? Universal has been having trouble rebooting Dracula for a while now. The recent NBC TV series starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers failed to capture audiences’ attention. The film’s marketing is also a little familiar; most posters resemble Warner Bros’ Dark Knight ad campaign, complete with taglines like “The Legend Is Born” and Bat motifs all around.
Judging from the trailer alone, there is the usual abundance of CGI; some of it looking quite beautiful while the rest of it is rather distracting. The film’s real obstacle will be whether or not it can juggle the subject matter. Are we going for outright blockbuster spectacular or something darker and more complicated like a character study? Mixing the two is a difficult thing to achieve.
From the looks of it, casting Luke Evans seems to be the film’s biggest highlight. His star has slowly been on the rise and with several big-budgeted films (and franchises) under his belt, it’s time to let him shine.
Evans explained in an interview with firstshowing.net a little more about Dracula as portrayed in the film:
“We’re back in the 1400′s when you meet this man who was the king of his land who had reigned peacefully for 10 years… It’s sort of an origin story, but it’s really the story of Vlad the Impaler and what he does and the things that happen to him in his life that show you how Dracula is born.”
In addition to Evans, the cast also includes: Sarah Gadon (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger), and Charlie Cox (Marvel’s forthcoming Daredevil Netflix series).
Dracula Untold will be released on October 17th.
