Normally when you think of a Superman movie poster, you think of him taking a pose of power. He's either in flight or performing a great feat of strength, as he did on the cover to Action Comics #1, by lifting a car over his head as weakling humans run panicked into the streets. This new poster for next summer's Man of Steel has none of that. He's handcuffed and being taken into custody by soldiers. Of course, this is done to make us ask questions like "WHY?!" (or the more uncouth "WTF?!") He must be surrendering because he could easily break those cuffs like tissue paper. Director Zack Snyder, producer Christopher Nolan, and Warner Bros are obviously trying to see this as more than just a simple superheroic adventure. This shows us that there will hopefully be a bit of complexity to the story. From the footage we've seen so far at San Diego Comic-Con, it's certainly darker, in the vein of the Dark Knight trilogy (interesting that the trilogy is called that not by the character's proper name nor by the first movie in the series).
Whatever it’s trying to tell us, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out. There is word that we’ll get an extended peek at the film during the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey IMAX showings which, alongside stacks of other trailers for Iron Man 3, The Wolverine, a 9 minute preview of Star Trek Into Darkness, and the nearly 3 hour Hobbit feature will almost guarantee that no one will be getting to work on time the morning after the midnight US premiere next Thursday evening at midnight (December 13th/14th). Expect much fanboy squeals of orgasmic joy long before Bilbo and Gandalf ever show their faces (bring plenty of napkins).
Here’s the full poster in all it’s gritty, chained glory.
Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, hits theaters June 14th, 2013.
