If you are currently reading Marvel then you, like me, are pretty invested in to the current event Original Sin, which only started a few weeks ago. Without giving us time to recover from Original Sin, Marvel is already starting to tease the next event, which will be called AXIS.
Marvel’s AXIS will follow the Original Sin event, and was first announced at C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo) with very little information to draw from. The first logo was teased, which featured the iconic symbols for the Avengers and the X-Men, signifying another event that will combine the two heroic sides of the Marvel Universe.
The last time this happened was in the climactic event known as Avengers vs. X-Men, which promised to change the landscape of the Marvel Universe forever! It kind of did that, and today we see a new mixture of teams and characters that reflects the new status quo. Original Sin has been touted as more of a Marvel wide event instead of focusing on specific teams, but it looks like AXIS plans to return to the success of AvX by focusing specifically on the X-Men and the Avengers.
The next teaser we saw came from the cover of Diamond’s June Previews, which featured an AXIS image drawn by Jim Cheung. The cover includes a new logo that is also an ambigram, meaning it can be read the same turned upside down, which is pretty cool. The first image featured an interesting roster of villains, including Red Onslaught, who we first saw in Uncanny Avengers #4. The other villains shown include Green Goblin, Loki, Sabretooth, Doctor Doom, and Carnage.
The latest complementary image from Jim Cheung appeared on a NYC transit poster advertising next month’s Special Edition: NYC Convention, where we can assumedly expect more details on AXIS. This teaser poster featured some interesting heroes that we can possibly expect to face off against the villains previously teased, although it isn’t actually confirmed as an AXIS image, despite the similar style to the previous AXIS teaser. The transit poster features Storm, Thor, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Deadpool and Medusa, which actually raises far more questions than answers at this point.
Is this a team of heroes that we will follow in AXIS, or merely a representation of some of the characters who will appear? A few years ago the Avengers vs X-Men teasers featured a number of characters together who didn’t meet up to battle in the event itself, so it might be a little too early to speculate on what the appearances of these characters mean.
However, we can expect AXIS to unfold from the events of Rick Remender’s Uncanny Avengers series, which is itself something of a continuation of Remender’s Uncanny X-Force series. The Uncanny Avengers team has operated pretty independently from the rest of the Marvel NOW universe, so it will be interesting seeing them take the lead in this new event.
There will be more news developing on AXIS over the next few months, so look to the ongoing Original Sin event for possibly more clues on AXIS.
