After Edgar Wright’s exit from the project, the web was in a bit of a tizzy. Then, after nearly a week’s wait, Marvel has announced Wright’s successor for the helm of Ant-Man as Peyton Reed. This isn’t Reed’s first romp with the world of capes and tights. He was originally helmed for Fantastic Four until Tim Story took the project over. Both directors have a comedic dynamic to their films – Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World are fan favorites, while Peyton’s films include Bring It On and The Break Up. Certainly not the most ideal line-up, but you can see the direction Marvel Studios want Ant-Man to take, especially with Paul Rudd as the star. Anchorman writer/director Adam McKay, who was for a brief moment rumored to be directing the film, will take on scripting for Ant-Man. Marvel’s latest is shaping up to be a hilarious take on the superhero genre and we applaud Marvel for thinking outside the box.

Guardians of the Galaxy

It looks like Groot and Rocket Racoon are prepared to kick some major galactic butt in the newest poster from the Marvel’s upcoming summer blockbuster. You can’t deny that the non-human dynamic duo are the heart of Guardians of The Galaxy –  because you’ve got to admit, a gunslinging racoon and a walking tree may be the most bad ass element of this movie. Groot is voiced by Vin Diesel and Rocket by Bradley Cooper, and are sure to give Hulk and Loki (some of Marvel’s other lovables in the MCU) some stiff, but fun competition. Fandango will be revealing a new poster daily for the upcoming week. Still to come are Peter Quill/Star Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer and maybe even a glimpse at Josh Brolin’s Thanos? In the meantime, here is the newest Guardians of the Galaxy TV spot…

Let’s hope August 1 gets here faster than you can say, “I am Groot!”

Doctor Strange

Hot off the heels of the announcement of the Doctor Strange film and its newly helmed director Scott Derrickson, Marvel has allegedly set their sights on two actors for the titular role – Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy. It hasn’t even been that long since Jared Leto was rumored to be a front runner.

These are definitely two standout picks, but they couldn’t be further apart aesthetically. It’s obvious Marvel wants to bring the sorcerer supreme into the MCU – as per his nod in Captain America: The Winter Soldier - and maybe even include the character in future Avenger’s films.

Both gents have respectable work in their favor. Cumberbatch’s roles in Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have pretty much labeled him as a Geek favorite. Though the same could be said for Hardy in his roles as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, and Eames in Inception. Though one should note that here we have two Brits being considered as prime casting for an American character. Again this is all still in speculation mode, but we’d be lying to you if we said we weren’t intrigued by the possibilities of Cumberbatch howling, “By the hoary hosts of hoggoth!” He definitely has the elegance and arrogant bravado that Doctor Strange possessed in his prime as a well sought after surgeon. And plus, we just love ourselves some Cumby.

How do you feel about Cumberbatch and Hardy as the sorcerer supreme? Be sure to let us know in the comments below or on the Geek Facebook page, and stay tuned to Geek for all of the latest Marvel Studios news.
