Is Hulk set to smash his way into theaters again?
Back in 2003 after Ang Lee’s Hulk came out, if someone told you that a few years from then, the Hulk would finally become the big movie star Hollywood you hoped he would be, you’d probably scoff at the person. Well, fast-forward to 2014, two years after The Avengers. The Hulk – now played by Mark Ruffalo – was the breakout star from The Avengers, and fans wanted more. If you’re one of those fans, it’s your lucky day! The Hulk just might be getting his own solo film.
Ruffalo said in an interview with Digital Spy that the idea of a standalone Hulk film is being heavily considered:
“I think they are, for the first time, entertaining the idea of it,” he said. “When we did The Avengers it was basically ‘No!’, and now there is some consideration for it.”
He did stress that nothing is definite, “not even a skeletal version of what it would be.” But the word is out there and there’s no doubt that the Disney machine is trying to figure out how to capitalize on the Hulk’s sudden fame.
This backs up what the original Hulk, Lou Ferrigno, said back in May. FirstShowing and Latino Review said that during a radio interview in Minnesota, Ferrigno mentioned that a new Hulk movie was coming out after the second Avengers film.
“Now because [Hulk] saved the day [in the first Avengers] they’re making another solo Hulk movie after the second Avengers comes out,”
What Ferrigno said is now old news, but still, his information (or instincts) seem to be pointing in the right place. Almost everyone came away from The Avengers talking not about Iron Man or Captain America, but the Hulk and how awesome he was. The studio knows that the Hulk is a character that the fanbase has latched onto, and the studio will wants to make money off of him however they can.
That may be a cynical view of the Disney-Marvel film universe, but on a more artistic note, it’s taken a while for Marvel to find the right actor who can carry the seriousness and campiness of Bruce Banner AKA The Hulk, and they found that actor in Ruffalo. He seems to recognize that he’s got to walk a fine line with the character, and he’s found the sweet balance between realism and comic book that the other actors (Eric Bana, Edward Norton) couldn’t seem to unearth.
